In October, Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL) received the prestigious CIPM Oscar Award for HR Best Practices in the Mining Sector. This isn’t just a shiny accolade – it’s a testament to SROL’s commitment to cultivating a competent, engaged, and diverse workforce. When I joined SROL in 2017, before the Segilola Gold Mine was fully funded, it felt like one of the boldest decisions of my life. I sought a challenge, and the mining sector—an emerging industry in Nigeria—presented just that. Back then, we were a small team wearing multiple hats, filling gaps, and working far outside our job descriptions. Little did I know, those early days would spark one of the most transformative pivots in my career. As the HSE Manager, I found myself contributing to SROL’s brand identity and communications, which caught the attention of Senior Management. They saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet discovered in myself and encouraged me to pivot into Corporate Affairs. With the right training, mentorship, and support, I embraced this new role and have never looked back. This is what sets SROL apart: we genuinely invest in capacity development and purpose-driven growth. My story is just one of many. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 A client of mine acquired a company. I was brought in to handle the product integration. A complex, high-stakes task. The client, being PE-funded, had also hired one of the top 3 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢𝙨 to craft the product strategy. In a meeting, 20 slides into their polished presentation, I raised my hand and said: “𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙮 𝙬𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠.” Why? Because: I had been there. I had done that. I knew the pitfalls they hadn’t accounted for. Their engagement manager’s response? “𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙨.” Spoiler alert: the 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁. A few weeks later, the consulting firm’s engagement was ended. Their perfect strategy crumbled under the weight of reality. Did I gloat? No. I got the job done. Here’s what I’ve learned: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛. No strategy survives without adapting to the messy, real-world details. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲. It’s the courage to speak up when something feels off. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗸. The truth is that great outcomes aren’t born from perfect plans. They’re built by people willing to challenge assumptions, listen, adapt, and do the work. Because at the end of the day, all it takes is a little bit of courage.
