NSW University students enrolled in healthcare degrees can apply for up to $12,000 in subsidies to support them in their studies. The grant initiative aims to create a future pipeline of health workers with up to 850 nursing students, 400 medical students and 150 midwifery students expected to enter the subsidy program each year. Subsidies are also available for students studying paramedicine, Aboriginal health, dentistry, oral health therapy, psychology, pharmacy, physiotherapy and medical physics. Students can now begin applying for this support and must be willing to make a five-year commitment to the NSW public health system. New students will receive scholarships of $4,000 per year and existing students will receive one-off payments of $8,000 upon graduation. Applications open for study subsidies to boost NSW healthcare workforce 15 January 2024 From today, students enrolled in healthcare degrees in NSW can apply for up to $12,000 in subsidies to support them in their studies. The initiative will create a future pipeline of health workers with up to 850 nursing students, 400 medical students and 150 midwifery students expected to enter the subsidy program each year. Subsidies are also available for students of paramedicine, Aboriginal health, dentistry and oral health therapy, psychology, pharmacy, physiotherapy and medical physics. It is estimated the subsidies will support around one third of health worker graduates over the next three years.

I have been preparing Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) to increase their chance of succeeding in the NCLEX-RN exam for more than 20 years. Most commonly I have been working with Hispanic nurses educated in their country of origin. Ocassionally I have served IENs from other backgrounds. One of the interesting findings throughout all these years is the following: Once a IEN complies with the admission criteria (yes, I do have an admission criteria in my programs) and is accepted into a program, I will assign a comprehensive nursing exam. The first several years, the exam was 100 questions. Lately is 150 questions. It didn't matterif the exam was standardized (ATI, HESI, KAPLAN), from a book, translated to Spanish, paper and pencil, or computerized. It didn't matter if the IENs was newly graduate, had years of experience, was from a BSN or ADN equivalent program, male or female. You get the point, as heterogenous the testing population could be it didn't matter... The score was always, always. Always, between 35% and 45%. All that data has helped me create a curriculum tailored exclusively for the IENs. And improve my outcomes. Is it really easy to be an Educator? Recently, our school had the privilege of inviting Clinical Nurses to assist with supervision and scoring our Nursing students during their Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Their feedback was eye-opening. They highlighted how demanding it was to mark and grade numerous student assessments accurately. Every paper required intense focus, precision, and timely completion—an experience that gave them a newfound respect for the complexity of grading, and educating in general. This experience highlighted something important: being a Nurse Tutor is far from a simple job. It involves much more than many might assume. Here are just a few of the crucial responsibilities: 1. Designing Comprehensive Curricula: Crafting lesson plans and course materials that meet educational standards of Nigerian Nursing and Midwifery Council, and other education bodies; and address diverse learning needs. 2. Mentoring and Supporting Students: Providing guidance, feedback, and encouragement to help students succeed academically, mentally and professionally. 3. Evaluating and Assessing Performance: Accurately grading assignments and exams while ensuring fair and constructive feedback to promote student growth. As I reflect on these responsibilities, I am deeply proud to merge my roles as a Nurse and an Educator. Combining these two professions allows me to contribute to both the healthcare field and the development of future professionals. It’s a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
