This week marks one year since taking over as CEO NORFOLK COMMUNITY LAW SERVICE LTD.
In that time I feel so fortunate to have been able to learn so much about the charity sector, why access to justice matters, social welfare law, Norfolk's issues and so much more.
I've had previously held views challenged and changed and been fortunate to meet an incredible number of people, doing some incredible things. Thankfully quite a few of those people work within our charity.
Overall it's strengthened a view that we may be lucky to have the many public services provided to people in this country, but all too often it's the most vulnerable that have to miss out when cuts need to be made or the axe falls.
It's helped to further enhance an opinion that, whilst there are always people looking to cheat the system, in reality the vast majority of people who seek help, do so because they need it.
And on a personal note, it's made me feel even more lucky to have had the chances in life that are denied to many, but for which I probably take for granted.
Plus, I realise now that the job you always felt was 'the one', doesn't have to be. There are other great challenges and opportunities out there, even if you have to change direction in your career to find them.
Of course everything isn't plain sailing or perfect. I've also learned there are far too many meetings and some people in organisations are guilty of using them as a safety net from the real work that needs to be done.
Sometimes great ideas get over-analysed and talked out of happening, when the best thing would be to just crack on and get on with it.
Oh and as far as the charity sector is concerned, lack of funding security risks holding back great organisations and incredibly valuable services.
On that basis, we've teamed up with Aviva, as part of their Community Fund, to try and raise vital funds to help those many people in Norfolk who are struggling with poverty.
