I have PCOS and I drove 1 hour and 15 minutes in California traffic to get to my OB/GYN this morning, and I will continue to do so. 🚗 On average, doctors spend less than 12 minutes in the room with a singular patient. On average, as a patient, we spend more time sitting in the waiting room than we do with our doctors. I don't blame our doctors. I think that most of the time they are doing their best. But this stark disparity between the time invested in seeking care and the brief moments we get with our doctors highlights a huge gap in our healthcare system— even more specifically in women's health, where issues often require not just medical attention but listening ears, time, true understanding and continuous support. So I drove 1 hour and 15 minutes to the doctor this morning. Because I knew I'd be met with top tier care. I spent less than 5 minutes in the waiting room. My doctor remembered me and my story. She sat down. She didn't rush me out of the door. She answered ever single question I had. She never made me feel crazy, or silly or stupid. We devised a plan to follow until I came back to see her again. And then I moved on with my day - feeling confident about what comes next. THAT should be normal care. But it's care that took me almost 8 years to get in the first place. It's care that I know that not all women are receiving. And it's a disparity that I am confident we can change through advocacy, creativity and content. Change starts with awareness. Strategic, educational content that tells stories, promotes conversations and advocacy can alter the landscape of women's health. I may be just a girl but I am on a mission to create spaces that make stories of women's health so LOUD that the women that need them can find them. March is Women’s History Month, and I have been reflecting on the importance of women's representation in healthcare as practitioners, as leaders, and as advocates to best support our patients. Women now account for 67% of the global health and social care workforce delivering essential health services to an estimated 5 billion people worldwide. Despite increased access to careers in the field, we still face wide gaps in research and understanding for areas unique to women and conditions that present differently in women than men. We see these gaps result in major health disparities in treatment that are largely preventable. If you are a black mother in DC, you are 10 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than the national average. Closing these gaps can only be possible if women are heard and valued and we can all play a role in supporting patients access the care and services they deserve, including our Unity Health Care pre, peri and postnatal patients. More than ever, it’s critical to continue our work on behalf of our patients to close care gaps and provide them with the compassionate, comprehensive, high-quality health care all of us deserve. #womenshistorymonth #womenshistory #maternalhealth #fqhc #valuechc
