Moment of pause, gratitude and reflection: There are many layers to society that are "heard but not seen", "off the radar" and often times go unnoticed. This does not reflect the importance of the work being done or that the lack of gratitude shown is intentional. Some things just operates in the background and require little attention while causing waves of positive impact. Today I would like to shed some light to the waves caused by the AIM Program led by Angela Lombardi at North Carolina Museum of Art. This tidal wave of a program has been sweeping many rural parts of North Carolina, promoting art and critical thinking amongst young students. The program partners with emerging and seasoned artists from all over NC to partner with schools for 6 weeks to offer art education as an after school. The level of programming and the results of just 6 weeks has left many gobsmacked. Students shared how not only has art helped them find a space to belong, they have shared how it has improved their mental health and added tremendous joy in their daily lives. Seeing big institutions broaden their reach, share their resources, think outside their immediate demographics and focus on community building is remarkable. This allows smaller individuals and businesses like Two Dots Studio who share similar values to join forces and collectively make bigger waves. We hope that many other bigger agencies, businesses and government bodies take this approach and invite like-minded partners to help create meaningful programs like this. I'm very excited to share the new series of videos made for the NCMA AIM program by Aaron Michael Thaddeus and his Two Dots Studio team! They worked alongside four of the artists involved with mentoring rural youth across the state to engage with big themes and the demonstration of their own techniques. These videos will work to help connect youth in the AIM program with works in the NCMA collection, exploring the who, what, when, where, and how of visual art in their very own state art collection.
