Let’s Be Real It is no secret that education is underfunded. The plight of black Colleges is the most glaring example of this situation. Policy makers perpetuate the practice and organized altruism follows suit. The result has worthy community-based organizations approaching funding requests with hats in hand with less than assertive statements of need. The sad result in too many instances is, boots are supplied without bootstraps when STEM programs for the most of those in need are “winnowed” down. The small grant mentality most be overcome by funding to succeed instead of just enough to fail. Underfunding STEM education will keep the next generation of children less prepared than their counterparts in other parts of the world and our economy at risk of being overwhelmed by nations we compete with. The effect is grass-root groups and start-up education ventures being challenged to do more with less. So, we will watch the underfunding continue and accept the resulting mediocracy.

The CCP Cloned America’s Leading STEM High School — and U.S. Educators Helped October 10, 2024 Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) in Fairfax County, Virginia, has come under scrutiny for its connections to Chinese interests. The school reportedly received $3.6 million from groups linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 2014. This alarming revelation has prompted Virginia's Secretary of Education to request information regarding the school's ties to these entities. Concerns escalated when it was revealed that a TJHSST employee communicated with Chinese officials about creating a "How to Clone TJHSST Handbook," which included curriculum materials and operational plans. Critics argue that this collaboration raises questions about the influence of foreign entities on American education.In response to these developments, Virginia's government has vowed to investigate the extent of CCP influence in local schools. Kresge has committed to expanding access to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with two new permanent $1 million endowment funds at Thurgood Marshall College Fund and UNCF, both renowned for creating pathways to higher education for underrepresented students. We shared this news this week at the TMCF CEO awards, which went to our own Rip Rapson on behalf of his and the foundation's longtime support for HBCUs. In addition, Kresge is offering both organizations a $500,000 challenge grant if they raise matching funds. We hope these grants will be a game-changer for Detroit high school graduates aiming to attend HBCUs, which have long been pivotal in advancing educational equity, economic mobility, and leadership opportunities for Black students. HBCUs have produced incredible success stories for over 150 years. Today, 6 of the top 10 out-of-state colleges that Detroit high school graduates matriculate to are HBCUs. Yet, many students need help to afford these life-changing institutions. Kresge’s investment and ongoing support from TMCF and UNCF will help bridge this gap and build a stronger pipeline to educational and career success.
