40 years ago today, history was made with the grand opening of the ‘Te Maori’ exhibition at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on September 10, 1984. Featuring 174 taonga from various museums and iwi, the exhibition drew over 70,000 visitors in its first week alone. Te Maori was an international success, touring four U.S. cities with Māori kaitiaki accompanying the taonga at every stop. The exhibition marked a pivotal moment, not only in the way museums presented cultural artefacts but also in the reclamation of Māori narratives. Created by Māori, for Māori, it sparked a cultural renaissance, offering the world a window into indigenous history, stories, and identity.

Napoleonic cultural heritage is the topic of this full day symposium that shall bring together cultural heritage institutions, museums and battlefields as sites of memory. I shall be chairing Session 1, with some of Europe’s top museums in conversation, guided by these two purposely chosen questions. The first - Who owns Napoleonic heritage, what memory or memories does it represent and for whom do museums conserve, present and interpret it? The second - Is there a European narrative in Napoleonic history and, if so, how can museums reconcile that with the national narrative they usually engage with? By asking such broad questions we shall hopefully be engaging in more deeper ways with the European dimension of cultural heritage and consensual curation as a tool to reach this goal. If you are interested, do reach out on email contact@napoleoncities.eu

Download: Museums and intangible cultural heritage. Towards a third space in the heritage sector https://lnkd.in/d8ShJ7su This book is concentrated around the concept of intersection. The many activities conducted by museum professionals and communities, groups and individuals (CGIs) related to intangible cultural heritage, are seen as colourful strings that at some point intersect and form diverse patterns. These patterns represent spaces that offer new and enriched insights into heritage. Throughout the book, we look for ways in which the different ‘paradigms’ can strengthen each other and how their ‘encounter’ creates a ‘third space’. A range of heritage professionals and ICH practitioners took part in this quest. We believe that the diversity of theoretical approaches and contribution formats reflects the values behind the diverse, holistic and integrated approach to heritage which this book wishes to promote. https://lnkd.in/d645MWnb

According to UNESCO intangible cultural heritage are the traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants, among others the knowledge and skills to produce traditional crafts. All over the world capable hands replicate movements that have developed during centuries and they create traditional objects as well as innovative elements. Museums are the perfect place to learn about the past, the lace schools such us the Il Giardino dei Punti in Milan or workshops like UnPizzo in Cantu are the perfect place to meet women that are innovating today. In all our journeys the encounter with those who preserve and pass down intangible cultural heritage is central. People are our main destination.
Today is International Museum Day and we celebrate it from the Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum) in #Burano, Venice, where to discover this ancient and fascinating art. We have dedicated one of our tours to lace and embroidery, find out more in the comments. #discoverItaly #internationalmuseumday

The Maritime Museum of Barcelona While the Barcelona Maritime Museum houses a fascinating collection of maritime history, it fell short of my expectations in comparison to other museums such as the Hamburg Museum, Newport Museum or the Edinburgh Museum. The signage was confusing, and the arrangement of exhibits lacked coherence, detracting from the overall experience. These issues were significant enough for me to note them in the museum’s feedback notebook. #MaritimeMuseumBarcelona #MuseumExperience #HistoryInSight #SignageConfusion #ExhibitArrangement #VisitorFeedback #MuseumCritique #CulturalExpectations #NavigationalChallenges #HeritagePreservation #MuseumJourney #HistoricalInsights #MaritimeCollection #MuseumStandards #VisitorExperience #FeedbackMatters #ImprovementNeeded #CulturalComparison #barcelona #ExpectationVsReality #MuseumVisit @MaritimeMuseumBCN MuseumViews @CulturalHeritage @MuseumCritics @VisitorVoices @motto.panah

It's a special moment when the technology you've been building becomes a tool that artist can utilize to make a powerful statement. "“Art” is weighted heavily towards what art most appears in the data, which explains perhaps the prevalence of more contemporary fantasy illustration or concept art in generic text-to-image outputs. This attempt to determine objective ground truth makes sense in a journalistic or commercial context, however in realms like art, culture and identity risks tethering us to populist, gameable or impenetrably reductive representations of areas that are crucially fluid." Super cool seeing 'xhairymutantx' by artists Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst at this year's Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial. The project's image generation portal was built using OctoAI! Try it yourself at xhairymutantx.whitney.org 🎨

#NewArticle Museographic narrating of dissonant heritage in Tianjin’s former international concessions Maria Gravari-Barbas, Sandra Guinand, Yue Lu & Chensi Shen Concessions—defined as the urban elements built by Western powers while ‘occupying’ various parts of the Chinese territory—have recently been granted heritage status by the Chinese national and local authorities. However, in many respects, they are ‘dissonant’ heritage sites since they are the result of the several-decade-long ‘colonial’ presence in Tianjin of nine foreign powers. The aim of this study is to understand how former international concessions are featured in museums and interpretation centres in present-day Tianjin. https://lnkd.in/e6mdmK5M
