In 2013, the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York found itself at a crossroads. With a collection spanning over 5,000 years of global art and millions of visitors each year, the museum was the second largest in the world. But in a time when museum audiences were craving more approachability, the Metropolitan Museum of Art had begun to feel aloof and hard to navigate. Enter Wolff Olins. 👀 We created a transformative brand for the museum with a dynamic ecosystem of elements - including font, colour, graphic ornament, image treatment, material, composition, and visual strategy - not to mention, we changed the name of the iconic institution to what people all over the world actually call it: The Met. The result was an adaptive visual identity ready to flex across user touch-points, communications and locations, to help The Met connect more meaningfully with visitors from print to screen to gallery. The result? Over 7 million visitors - the highest number of visitors to the museum since tracking began over 40 years ago! Check out a new poster I have designed for Art Project Revolution! ART PROJECT «REVOLUTION» is a multidisciplinary, political art project on human rights. Mainly they shoot short films and hold exhibitions. The heart of the project, Dasha Brian, asked me to design a series of posters for their movies (you can watch them on YouTube). First movie I designed a poster for is a short-meter almanac. The movie explores different aspects of women's lives, raising questions about stereotypes, discrimination, and inequality. Equality of rights and opportunities between men and women is enshrined in law in many countries - but stereotypes about the role of women in society are still common and hinder their development and realization. 📢 Call for Black Artists: Emancipation Park Memorial 2024 @ AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives & City of Brampton 📢 AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives in collaboration with the City of Brampton, invites Black artists and creatives based in Ontario to submit examples of their artwork plus a working concept for the creation of a permanent outdoor memorial artwork at Emancipation Park in Brampton. Priority will be given to those who have connections to the Caribbean, as well as a connection to Brampton or living in Brampton. This is a two-stage call. In stage one, artists will submit a proposal under the themes of unity, empowerment, Black liberation and resilience and the legacy of the UNIA, connections to Marcus Garvey, and Caribbean emancipation legacies. In the second stage, successfully shortlisted artists, creatives, and/or art collectives will work closely with professional engineers and designers from the Black-led arts organization, Astrosankofa Arts Initiative. Shortlisted artists will create multiple concepts to present to the Black community to critique, provide feedback on or select. The artwork should be functional, safe for the public and visually compelling. The artwork can be either a singular structure or a series of works. Shown here is a culmination of collaborative work between The smArt Collective artist member Anton Franz Hoeger and myself. You can catch this solo exhibition of 23 master paintings in Fort Worth, Texas. Location - Arts Fort Worth ( Arts Fort Worth ) Run Time - October 6, 2023 to November 25, 2023 Title - Hoeger's Middle America Curator Statement - Looking across the United States today… Climate Change is catastrophically damaging communities and the environment. Women’s Rights and Trasngender Rights continue to be a source of contention on the national stage. Racism and religious bigotry runs rampant in the face of an increasingly diverse United States. Propaganda has now taken the form of disinformation in the digital age, leading to a division in public health policies over such issues as masks mandates. Furthermore, Militarism and notorious paramilitary groups are on the rise as we see violence erupt at home and abroad. The struggles of the working class continue under the capitalist economic system. Looking at the current American political landscape, polarization is at an all-time high. Anton Franz Hoeger addresses these very problems engulfing American society through his artwork, however, with an emphasis on contemporary White America, specifically Middle America. In art history the movement known as American Regionalism depicted primarily the rural Midwest region (Middle America) in the 1930s; notable artists from this era include Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Contemporary art should then continue to have a dialogue on the political and cultural distress of Middle America since its development in the 1930s, a wider sentiment that is now shared across the nation. The artworks presented in this exhibition are meant to capture in part, the climate of Middle America’s socio-political atmosphere by providing compelling paintings gathered from Hoeger’s lifetime body of work. These works can also be seen to reference historical and present characteristics of Middle America like that of the continued reliance on railroad, animal husbandry, agricultural, and manufacturing industries. Middle America should not be seen as a monolithic identity. The selected paintings do not attempt to encapsulate the entire demographic of a loosely defined group of people, but rather to hint at a subject matter that is imbued with symbolism and esoteric imagery, often alluding to perceived Middle American conservative values, ideology, religion, and culture. Fantastic Realism, the style in which Hoeger paints, denotes a sense of a familiarity by rendering anatomically correct human figures with deep expressive emotions. In contrast, the figures in the paintings are placed within an unfamiliar background that depicts an empty void in a dream-like space, abstract and foreign, emphasizing the idea that this is a world at odds. A New Age of Interacting with History: The Future is Borderless 🌌 Everyone remembers a moment when history truly becomes immense and personal. Not having grown up with the internet, my moment only struck once I stood under Brunalleschi’s dome in Florence, well into my twenties. Now, we don’t need to stamp our passports to experience history over, under, and all around us. Legacy institutions are using technology to rethink how to engage and inspire us, creating truly borderless experiences. Museums and libraries are going through a rebirth, using their collections and archives in new ways for new audiences. I recently spoke to YuJune Park, a designer, speaker, and educator with deep expertise in creating hybrid physical-digital experiences in the cultural heritage sector, to get her thoughts on this renaissance and what the future holds. All are welcome at the opening. ‘Patterns of the eclipse’ 13 August – 14 September 2024 Opening 15 August, 5pm Blockprojects Gallery 759 Glenferrie Rd Hawthorn, VIC 3122 Gallery open Wed-Fri 12-6pm, Sat 11am-5pm (Tues by appointment) In his new exhibition ‘Patterns of the eclipse’ Vivian Cooper Smith draws inspiration from minimalism, science fiction, and new age aesthetics to challenge photography’s conventional boundaries. His work invites viewers to discover meaning not just in the subject matter, but in the haptic process of creation itself.   Central to Smith’s work is the model of an eclipse—a cosmic alignment that both obscures and reveals, casting shadows on Earth and creating spectacles for its inhabitants. Smith recreates this phenomenon within his studio, positioning the camera as the situated earthbound observer. Before the lens, an arrangement of geometric objects and paper cutouts intersect and obstruct one another in a fluid, ever-shifting composition. Light passes through this scene and encounters a diffraction grating on the camera lens where it proceeds to unravel and reform into an array of patterns and colors.   This studio-based methodology embodies ideas derived from the writing of Karen Barad, who proposes (among other things) that new ideas emerge not from opposing differences, but by working through and with them. Smith’s approach thus becomes a visual manifestation of Barad’s philosophy. Each object in his studio setup exists not in isolation but in relation to others. The resulting photographs stand as visual testaments to this worldview, where obstruction and intersection don’t hinder creation but become essential to it.   In essence, Smith’s work is a meditation on the generative power of difference and obstruction. It challenges us to see beyond binary oppositions and instead explore the rich patterns and insights that emerge when we allow diverse elements to interact with and inform one another.
