As the number of museum traineeships and apprenticeships are shrinking, so are the routes into a career in heritage. However, there are still excellent programmes opening up the museum workforce and enabling a wider group of young people to find meaningful work and build skills and confidence for future employment. Careers are one of the core strands of our 2025 conference, Rethinking museums: fostering optimism, belonging and meaning for families, children and young people. We'll be exploring this theme with: 📚 Case studies from a range of expert speakers 🔧 Two workshops 💬 Different approaches to Youth Panels: a discussion 5 February 2025 10am - 4.30pm A range of reduced price tickets and bursary places are available #RethinkingMuseums https://lnkd.in/ee-xw6q3 📷️Jayne Lloyd for Kids in Museums

I feel like Isobel a lot of the time. I have an MA in Creative Writing, and though I have editing experience from running my own literary journal, I am finding it very tough as an unemployed twenty-four year old. Throughout my schooling, college was talked of as a destination that could open up the doors for me to do better than my parents. I graduated filled with hope, knowing that having a postgraduate degree would open up more doors to jobs with higher pay. None of this has materialised. This is Ireland: a country crippled by inflation, a housing and a health crisis. You can see why Ireland is one of the eighth most depressed places in the world according to the Global Mind Project. You can understand why I've had moments of intense anger and frustration as I scour, looking for a job that does not require +1 year experience for an entry level position. There are no places I can go to to gain experience. I am living in a Catch 22 situation where it seems many of my generation are being sidelined and blocked from joining the workforce. The solution is being employed. I feel the voices of the unemployed and the newly graduated are being swept aside by reports of record employment and prosperity. This is not prosperity. Prosperity is having enough homes to house the population. Prosperity is having a health system that can function without causing neglect. Prosperity is equal opportunity for graduates and school leavers to enter the workforce. It's encouraging and funding companies to train in-house. Investment in future workers should be as high on the list as fixing the housing and health crisis in this country. Ireland feels like it's being abandoned by it's leaders, but it also feels like we've been forgotten about or rather, they have decided that our lives are not worth investing in. This has to change for Ireland to start recovering properly. Only then will my situation and that of so many in Ireland will start to change for the better. Ignoring the problem merely aggravates rather than solves it. It stokes the far right, many of whom are faced with a similar job insecurity situation that I'm in. It stokes fear and hatred. Fix it, and maybe the Catch 22 will finally end. #unemployed #jobseeker #thetimesuk #ireland #jobsecurity #struggling #housingcrisis #mentalhealthcrisis #healthcrisis #lackofaction #solution #austerity #prosperity #graduate #postgraduate #mastersdegree #entrylevel #jobhunting #emigration
Last summer Isobel graduated from Bristol University with an upper second-class honours degree in theatre and French. Her bursting CV includes three A-levels (AAB), 11 GCSEs, a year studying abroad in Toulouse, a paid internship in the administration department of a languages school, various volunteering positions and a postgraduate certificate from Lancaster University. Last week Isobel had an interview at the job centre: she is applying for universal credit. “I feel like I’ve been misled,” says the 23-year-old, who is living at home with her parents in the Lake District. “We’re told that graduation is a huge achievement and the beginning of something, but then there’s nothing. It’s like freefall. I felt like that a year ago and I still feel like that now.” Isobel had initially hoped to find a graduate job in publishing or marketing. Earlier this year she had an interview with a fashion brand for a copywriting position. She spent three days completing tasks set by the employer, such as writing social media posts. Months have now passed and she is yet to receive a response. “It feels like a huge waste of time,” she says. “I deserve a rejection [letter] at least, even if it’s a bog-standard one.” Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dzyYVZfC

As we look ahead to 2025, Santa Ana High School VAPA and CTE are focused on expanding opportunities that empower students to excel as creative professionals in a rapidly evolving world. We’re collaborating with Cal State LA to introduce dual enrollment courses in film production in 2025, with plans to extend these programs to animation and digital music production by 2026. These initiatives will offer students college-level training and credit, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in the creative industries. Building on our strong network of community partnerships--especially the Frida Cinema-- we’re creating internships where students use their AI skills to support the local economy. These hands-on experiences help students see their impact as creatives, not just as individuals, but as contributors to a thriving community. Globally, we’re strengthening international partnerships, giving students the opportunity to collaborate with schools worldwide. These connections expose them to diverse storytelling styles and prepare them to navigate the global creative landscape. We’re also expanding relationships with corporate partners like The Humble Company to provide high-level internships that bridge the gap between education and professional success. These experiences position our students as the next generation of creative leaders, ready to make an impact on local and global stages. We’re excited for the future and committed to giving our students the tools, opportunities, and vision they need to shape the industries of tomorrow.
