A Call to Action to Help Our Planet! One Earth One Chance has planted trees in the DFW area over the last few years. We are at 596+ trees and 662 shrubs in city parks, neighborhoods and schools to date! Come support tree planting, staking and mulching, under the guidance of arborists. Volunteering with us is a fun-filled, dirt-covered, time outside enriching soil and lives. Expect to have a fun time doing the "dirty" work of digging holes, moving trees into holes, staking and mulching. Tools will be provided. What to wear: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes; Weather appropriate clothing that allows for movement; What to bring: Reusable bottle of water; Sun protection, Bug spray The tree canopy within cities has become a growing concern in municipalities worldwide as urbanization has led to land-use conversion and loss of urban forests. The benefits of tree canopy in mitigating the negative effects of air pollution, atmospheric carbon dioxide, storm water runoff, and environmental and social factors such as human health and property values, have led to an increasing desire to stop or reverse the losses in canopy cover. The current average canopy cover in the DFW area is 29% against a target of 37% by 2040, and the statistic is lower in areas of economic inequity. Not only would the lives of any visitors to the parks for the next 100+ years be impacted, so would the lives of residents in adjacent neighborhoods and the children enjoying the playgrounds (500-1,000 lives and more impacted). Additionally, these trees will provide a benefit to the entire community through cooling the air, sequestering carbon, and helping reduce runoff from rainfall. If we act now, tree planting could cut carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by up to 25 percent, to levels last seen almost a century ago. Planting trees is relatively cheap and our tree planting efforts recognize the importance of trees for planet and human health. The cost of 30-45 gallon containerized trees and irrigation is included in the cost of $500 per tree. We are also trying to raise $50,000 in funds for 100 trees in spring 2024. 🌲It's World Rainforest Day!🌲 This internationally celebrated day was founded by Rainforest Partnership in 2017 in order to protect and support the world's rainforests. Why? One of these goals happens to be Goal 15 - Life on land. This goal represents the fight against deforestation and the effect that it has on ecosystems. To support with this, we have worked with our glove production partner to plant trees in Sri Lanka. Gifts Of Ecologically Sensitive Land and gifts of private land are becoming increasingly important to the preservation of Canada's environmental heritage. The federal Ecological Gifts Program (the "EGP") provides a way for Canadians who hold ecologically sensitive land to simultaneously protect nature for future generations and attract favourable tax consequences. Benefits of donation Section 118.1 of the Income Tax Act (Canada) (the "ITA") governs gifts of ecologically sensitive property. In Quebec, the process is also governed by the Quebec Taxation Act (Quebec). If the requirements are met, corporate donors may deduct the amount of their ecological gift directly from their taxable income. An individual donor receives a non-refundable tax credit. In addition, the tax payable on a capital gain arising on a qualifying ecological gift is reduced to nil. There is currently a ten year carry-forward period for claiming these benefits. Process for donation Gifts of ecologically sensitive property can be a useful tax reduction tool when made by inter vivos or testamentary disposition, but each method has its own considerations to keep in mind. When making an inter vivos ecological gift, the donor will lose their personal use of the land following donation. Another consideration for an inter vivos donation is the importance of a well-drafted gift agreement. Testamentary gifts on the other hand provide the donor with lifelong use of the property, but create complexities in the donor's estate. When making an ecological gift by will, ensure the donor's estate plan contemplates the steps that will need to be taken by their executor in connection with the gift. If the gift is made as a consequence of the death of the donor then it will qualify for the nil capital gains inclusion only if made by a graduated rate estate. It can be difficult to complete the ecological gift process within the limited time frame of a graduated rate estate (see "Testamentary charitable giving and the graduated rate estate: A refresher" by Elena Hoffstein). In order for donors to receive the tax benefits from such donations, there are three main requirements. We need to ensure that the earth recuperates what it freely gives out during our lifetime. The future is now. Partnering with 🌲One Tree Planted🌲, a non-profit dedicated to restoring forests globally, we’re committed to creating vital habitats for biodiversity. With 75% of Europe’s trees showing the same age and primarily conifers, our ancient forests are at risk. 54% of Europe’s last primary forests remain unprotected (Sabatini et al., 2018). But there’s hope – since 2000, Europe’s forest coverage has grown by 5.3%. Earth Day serves as a poignant reminder to safeguard our natural treasures and create new opportunities for global relief. International Moving Company Donates £1,511 to the Gorilla Organization Charity as Part of Their Sustainability Commitment Burke Bros Moving Group, one of the UK’s leading international movers, have raised £1,511 for the Gorilla Organization charity through their commitment to net zero and being certified PAS2060 carbon neutral. In 2022, Burke Bros began their journey to net zero, by measuring their full carbon footprint, building a plan to net zero and becoming the world’s first PAS2060 carbon neutral removals and storage company. They have a target of becoming net zero by 2040, 10 years ahead of the UK backstop. As part of the PAS2060 Carbon Neutral certification, a globally recognised standard for carbon neutrality, Burke Bros raised £1,511 and nominated The Gorilla Organization as the recipient; donating £1 for every tonne of CO2 emissions they have offset. Founded in the early 1990s, The Gorilla Organization, supports the anti-poaching patrols created by the pioneering primatologist Dr Dian Fossey. Nowadays, as well as helping to safeguard Africa’s critically endangered gorillas, the charity’s projects have transformed the lives of some of Africa’s poorest communities. The organisation, as well as supporting ranger patrols, also run projects which include organic farming, tree planting and gorilla-friendly beekeeping. All of these give impoverished communities the opportunity to earn a sustainable income without having to rely on the natural resources found in the gorillas’ forest home and in turn, conservation of the natural habitat helps to protect the planet. This vital donation will help equip forest rangers to track and monitor gorillas, promote sustainable livelihoods through organic farming and educate children about gorillas and the importance of environmental conservation. The cause will always remain close to my heart and furthermore gorillas also inhabit and help sustain tropical forests, which are critical ‘carbon sinks.’ Protecting gorillas indirectly supports efforts to combat climate change by preserving these forests.

A small army from the KPMG UK Nottingham office arrived in an area of countryside in the Ashfield district of our beautiful county today. KPMG staff were very much looking forward to taking part in one of our company's green volunteering days. Our mission on the day was to save the earth; well, hopefully make it a little bit better anyway! We joined forces with The Sherwood Forest Trust, which kindly facilitated this event for us at Coxmoor Golf Club. A major tree planting operation, which is part of the 'Trees for Climate' project, involving the placement of over 9000 saplings, is currently underway at this site. Trees for Climate is a five year programme of woodland creation led by England’s Community Forests. Being supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Forestry Commission, and the Community Forest Trust, it is running until March 2025. Across Nottinghamshire, the Sherwood Forest Trust is working in partnership with the Greenwood Community Forest, receiving financing from DEFRA’s Nature for Climate Fund. Greenwood Community Forest, hosted by Nottinghamshire County Council, is the lead organisation with which the Sherwood Forest Trust has entered into a formal arrangement for the duration of the Trees for Climate scheme. The Sherwood Forest Trust (SFT), as a key partner of the Greenwood Community Forest in this new programme, has committed to plant 250 hectares across Nottinghamshire during the five year period. Trees for Climate will also contribute significantly towards the SFT Sherwood Afforestation Prospectus, to plant 100,000 trees by 2025. A wide range of public, private, and voluntary organisations, as well as local communities, will be involved in the Trees for Climate programme. The new woodlands which are being created as part of Trees for Climate, will store large quantities of carbon (around 2 million metric tonnes in total), playing an important role in the national mission of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. These woodland developments will also help to deliver natural flood management systems, improve air quality, and establish a more advantageous setting for the creation of employment opportunities, economic recovery and growth. More communities will get access to nature, which has been proven to boost health and wellbeing, whilst providing both children and adults living in urban settings with a chance to explore natural environments. Additionally, wildlife habitats will benefit, becoming more robust and better linked, thereby enhancing biodiversity.
