This year we celebrate our Ten Year Anniversary. Most people don’t know this, but Black Barn Financial LLC started in 2014 with just 5 clients and $1.2 million in managed assets. In our first year we had less than $15,000 in REVENUE. I don’t even want to say what our profit (ahem, loss) was that year. But even without much revenue, what I did have was a solid plan. I knew that people wanted what we offered — investing advice specifically attuned to the unique needs of those investors whose perspectives had been overlooked by traditional investing models. Today we’ve grown to over $100 million in managed assets and 140 households (including those original 5). We’re still a boutique firm, but we’re not small potatoes. Planning and growth is in our DNA. Success for us is guiding both our clients and our firm toward the future, but always remembering who we are and where we came from. My wife and I recently took our kids to their first Pride parade and it was just beautiful to watch their excitement at the various activities at each vendor booth. My daughter’s curiosity asked a thoughtful question, “why are all of these people at the parade?” And this is how we explained it. These people and thousands of others all around the world support what’s called Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) values every day. You can think of them like a superhero team that makes sure everyone feels welcome and included! 1. So what do we mean by Diversity? Imagine a big box of crayons. Each crayon is a different color, right? Well, people are like those crayons! We come in all shades, sizes, and backgrounds. And that's really awesome. 2. Now what do we mean about Equity? Imagine a race you’re in where everyone starts at different points. So some kids have a head start, while others need a little boost. Equity means making sure everyone gets the same chance to cross over the finish line. Fair play for all! 3. Alright now Inclusion: Think of a cool bounce house. It's not fun if only a few friends get to play inside and others just standby, right? Inclusion means calling out and inviting everyone to bounce with you. We want everyone to feel like they belong and can share their really cool ideas! So how about we be the super awesome DEI superheroes! Remember, it's about celebrating differences, being fair, and making sure everyone's voice is heard. Now let’s go get some ice cream and face painting!

PURPOSE-DRIVEN JOURNEY... As I reflect on the past couple of weeks—engaging in conversations with clients, partners, colleagues, and organizations—I experienced a profound realization during my morning walk with my loyal companion, Sancho. Amidst the hustle, it dawned on me that I am surrounded by an incredible circle of purpose-driven individuals and organizations. They aren't merely chasing dollars; their focus lies in building and serving the communities and groups they deeply connect with. It's more than business; it's a commitment to making a meaningful impact. And let's take a moment to appreciate this: it's not just nonprofits doing incredible work; it's businesses and organizations actively solving real problems. Now, isn't that something to celebrate? Have you ever paused to consider the problems you are solving and the value you are adding? In my own journey, we initially believed we were creating meaningful connections through storytelling—and that's undeniably true. However, as the years unfolded, we discovered a deeper purpose. We are not just telling stories; we are elevating the voices of our Latinos and Latinas, actively reshaping the narrative. It's a journey filled with purpose, and I am grateful to be a part of it. 🚀✨

I’m about to celebrate AlmCrown’s 10 year anniversary. If I could do it all over again, here’s what I would change: 1) I’d secure financing as early as possible. I didn’t get proper financing until my ninth year. Before that, it was the Bank of Jason. Bootstrapping may work for some, but it was tough for me. 2) Don’t be afraid to delegate. This is challenging for me. It often feels like I’m the only one that can get things done. But, ironically, without delegating, things often take longer to get done. 3) Outsource time-consuming, routine work like answering phones. I used to think that if I could do it I shouldn’t pay anyone else. That cost me time and money in the long run. 4) Over communication is better than no communication. It’s important your staff is in the loop at all times. Otherwise, how do you expect them to keep up? 5) Don’t neglect the gym. Physical health is just as important as your business’s financial health. Taking care of myself wasn’t as much of a priority as it should have been when I was trying to get my company off the ground. 6) Don’t assume handshakes are binding. Until something is put in writing and signed, it’s not final. And here’s one thing I would never change: Value the people that made it all possible.
