A beautiful way to start 2025, working with Muslimah Sports Association young people’s group. Today we made collages inspired by cultural heritage, this was inspired by the exhibition we saw last week at the V and A. I loved the conversations and exchanges that happened during our session, collage is such a beautiful way to tell personal stories.
The article raises an interesting point about the % of the money spent of construction and development on venues for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, when ROI can be improved by creative use of existing public spaces.
The Olympics is well known globally for huge costs and short term benefits and huge stadiums and venues with huge long term costs and limited subsequent usage.
It's good to see the AO trying some new strategies to involve the younger generations who participate differently to other previous generations.

Building a brand to build a movement
In 2014, the England women’s rugby team won the World Cup. It was a huge achievement, but let's be honest, how many people really knew about it at the time? Women’s rugby wasn’t in the spotlight, and the players weren’t household names. Fast forward to today, and it is a sport that is played by women and girls across the world. We see megastars on our screens: from Maggie Alphonsi MBE breaking barriers as a pundit, to rugby podcasts like "The Good, The Scaz & The Rugby" centred around the women’s game.
So, what happened?
Along with all the work at grass roots, I believe the fact that the RFU committed to building more than just a winning team, they wanted to create a brand, helped build a movement.
In 2016, England Rugby launched a powerful campaign introducing the "Red Roses," symbolizing the journey of a female rugby player through the growth of a red rose. Following Emily Scarratt from her beginnings to becoming a powerhouse on the pitch. It was poetic, emotional and captivating. But what made it even more remarkable was the timing.
Women’s rugby was still amateur with a very small following, but England Rugby saw the potential and invested early, positioning the Red Roses as more than just a team, they became role models and a symbol of possibility for young girls everywhere.
What’s remarkable is how far we've come. Back in 2001, when I started playing rugby there wasn’t even a local league, the idea of women’s rugby being on prime-time TV was unimaginable. Today, it’s mainstream and it is even represented at the Olympics.
This transformation didn’t happen overnight. England Rugby laid the groundwork before the big sponsorships, before the professional contracts in 2019, and before the world was paying attention. It does raise a few important questions: Was it okay to build a brand before paying women? Should more have been done sooner to level the playing field between the men's and women’s game? Why are we still so far behind with the women’s game?
While we can debate the timing and the progress, one thing is undeniable, the steps taken, mean that now a little girl can imagine being a professional rugby player. She can see herself on TV, hear their stories, and dream of wearing the Red Rose herself. And that, I think, is absolutely incredible.

The latest bonus Thinking in English Podcast episode looks at the history and development of Olympic sports!
From ancient stadion races, to motorboat racing and tug-of-war in the early 20th century, to future sports like cricket and squash. I also take some time to consider what sports could be added in the future!
Earlier this week, I released a main Thinking in English episode on the new Olympic sport of breaking.
In researching and writing that episode, it made me really curious to explore how Olympic sports have developed and changed over the years.
Today, we will discuss the history of the Olympics, from the games of ancient Greece, to the weird sports of the early 20th century, to recent and modern disciplines, and the future of Olympic sport.

So I need a bit of help and I'm hoping the Linkedin community would help.
I am part of the managerial team for one of the most consistent entertainment dance events in Africa. FFWNM
This is their website and YouTube channel

We've been consistent for about a decade now, 7 years to be precise (I think) and we host a show every month except for December (we have families too.)
Basically, I know we have the numbers with a thriving and active community that I am proud to be part of.
10k subscribers on YouTube, 17k on Instagram, 478k on TikTok, and we can boast of 1-3k physically.
So trust me when I say we have the numbers, abroad and local. I didn't know how much we were known until we visited Kenya and people came for a dance session.
A friend of ours is currently competing in the Redbull Dance Your Style in India and he is talking about how amazed and shocked he was that people recognized from one of our recent videos.
So the recognition is there, but I or rather we are still trying to figure out how to connect with big brands or sponsors or companies to show that we are worth investing in and that they would get their money's worth.
And why I bring this up is because I've seen smaller brands with less community getting these deals 😫 but we are not.
So how do I connect with these big brands for sponsorship, and prove our worth and numbers to them?

Timeless legends come very rarely. But when they do, they inspire countless generations, for a long time to come.
There is a simplicity and universality in their values, which is very endearing to the society.
At SRT Sports, we have the honour of representing Sachin Tendulkar. Our endeavour is simple - to be the bridge and connect like-minded partners with Sachin Tendulkar.
