INDONESIA: Tourist tax to possibly increase Bali is considering increasing its tourist tax after introducing it in February to help preserve the local culture and ecosystem, according to Karryon. International tourists are required to pay IDR150 000 (R165), but this could increase to around IDR800 000 (R885). It is hoped that it will attract more higher-spending tourists and reduce the number of badly behaved tourists.

This is courage. I love it! 4.8 million tourists visit Bali every year which means Bali stands to gain US$48 million right off the bat. Will it make a hoot of difference to their tourist arrivals. No. Not one iota. So why does Malaysia cower in fear that any rise in our pitifully low airport tax will frighten away visitors? We already have close to the lowest airport tax rate in Southeast Asia and there continues to be resistance to raising rates by RM5 or just over USD1 because "visitors won't come to Malaysia". Seriously? The impact on our airport maintenance coffers would be possibly USD20m which would easily pay for the non functioning, 3 year delivery wait of the aerotrain. We need to lead with courage, think international and keep up with the times. Someone tell me I'm wrong.

The Czech Republic is another European country that has tackled the problem of uncontrolled tourist rentals, with a particular focus on the "grey zone" activities encouraged by platforms such as Airbnb. As a result, Prague suffers from overtourism and tax evasion. To tackle the situation, the authorities are planning to introduce legal requirements, including mandatory registration, rental period limits and income declaration. A national register of landlords will also be set up and fines will be imposed for non-compliance. These measures are expected to reduce the negative impact of tourist rentals on local communities. With the entry into force of the EU Short Term Rental Regulation, we call on the Ministry of Economic Affairs to resolutely transpose its provisions into Lithuanian legislation and to address the regulation of apartment rentals for short-term accommodation in Lithuania. https://lnkd.in/dvQSYGi5

Despite the challenges Boracay has faced since the pandemic, it has overtaken Cebu City in overnight stays. The key shift has been the change in demand from international tourists in 2019 to domestic tourists in 2023. The Department of Tourism-6 recently attributed the low number of international visitors to accessibility issues, such as fewer direct international flights and multiple stops required before reaching Boracay. Interestingly, Lapu-Lapu City recorded 714,708 foreign tourists and 359,074 domestic tourists in 2023, making it the top destination in the Philippines for foreign overnight stays. Cebu City, meanwhile, struggled to recover its pre-pandemic overnight stays, ending 2023 at 36% below its 2019 figures. While most well-known tourist destinations in the Visayas did not fully recover their pre-pandemic levels in 2023, they still managed to reach more than 60% of their 2019 numbers. With demand in the Visayas primarily driven by domestic tourism, the region is anticipated to receive even more domestic tourists this year after recording 119.6 million domestic trips in 2023. #tourism #philippinetourism #philippines #visayas #boracay #mactan #cebucity
