Check out this valuable paper by Marije Steensma on a novel method to effectively reduce inbreeding in Friesian horses using mating quotas and kinship. It would be fascinating to see how this approach works with Thoroughbreds! #HorseRacing #Inbreeding #Thoroughbred #AnimalScience #AnimalBreeding

What is the best strategy to reduce the inbreeding rate in the Friesian horse population? We used pedigree analysis to reflect on inbreeding trends and their main determinants in the past. In addition, we evaluated the effectiveness of breeding strategies using stochastic simulations based on parameters derived from the true population. Our simulations show that breeding strategies related to kinship levels are the most effective in reducing the inbreeding rate in the Friesian horse population. We recommend a novel approach named "stratified mating quota", where breeding sires are assigned a mating quota based on their individual mean kinship values compared to the population mean kinship. 🦢 Ohio’s 2010 Swan Management Plan established a goal for delisting trumpeter swans when the population reached 40 or more breeding pairs for three consecutive years. Biologists confirmed more than 40 breeding pairs for the first time in 2015 and every year since. Ohio hosted 152 breeding pairs in 2023. Another prerequisite for delisting was for trumpeters to breed in at least 15 counties. The latest survey documented trumpeters breeding in 26 counties. By both metrics, trumpeter swan populations have surpassed our management goals for the species.

*Did you know...?*🪴 The newest bred and cultivated varieties are done by The Mastergrowers. A pre-coordinated strategy for the breeding process has been stipulated by HiBreeding. The seedlings are given test numbers, and with these test numbers, we can trace their ancestors.🧬 #hibreeding #hi #breeding #hydrangeainnovation #hydrangea

GERMANY: More pigs on farms in Thuringia The number of pigs on farms in Thuringia has continued to rise. As the State Statistical Office in Erfurt announced on Wednesday, there were 644,900 pigs on farms at the beginning of November. That was 29,700 pigs or five percent more compared to the beginning of May and four percent more compared to the same time last year. The increase was primarily due to an increase in the number of fattening pigs, whose population increased by around 24,000 to 158,900 animals (18 percent), it was said. At 71,100 animals, the number of breeding pigs was five percent below the level in the May survey. The number of piglets increased by two percent within six months and the number of young pigs by three percent. Only farms with at least 50 pigs or 10 breeding sows were counted. https://lnkd.in/eadxcwsF #swineindustry #swinefarming #swine #porkmarket

What is the best strategy to reduce the #inbreeding rate in the Friesian horse population? The Friesian horse is the oldest native horse breed in the Netherlands and has grown to a worldwide popular breed with high social, cultural-historical and economic value. Although the current size of the active breeding population is quite large, the Friesian horse has had limited #geneticdiversity and high inbreeding rates for several generations. Researchers from #wur_abg used pedigree analysis to reflect on inbreeding trends and their main determinants in the past, and evaluated the effectiveness of the current additional breeding strategies using stochastic simulations based on parameters derived from the true population: "Our simulations show that breeding strategies related to kinship levels are the most effective in reducing inbreeding rates," says Marije Steensma, PhD at the Animal Breeding and Genomics chair group. Based on their results, Marije and her colleagues recommend a novel approach named ‘stratified mating quotas’, where breeding sires are assigned a mating quota based on their individual mean kinship compared to the population mean kinship.
