This stunning shot of the Lagoon nebula (M8) was caught by Ken Walker, in Sagittarius with his SVX130T-R. This emission nebula is one of only two star forming nebulae, that are faintly visible to the eye from mid-northern latitudes. It rests roughly 5,200 light-years away from Earth and has a diameter of about 150 light-years. In addition, it includes a tornado-like structure caused by a hot O-type star, that emanates ultraviolet light, heating and ionizing gasses on the nebula’s surface. https://lnkd.in/gfnVfmc6 #stellarvue

The summit of Mt. Rainier (Tahoma/Takoma) might look like a solid white mass from a distance, but the glacier in its cratered peak hosts a network of icy caves more than two miles long. And they've persisted for decades or longer—a remarkable feat for caves made of ice sitting on top of a volcano. Similar ice caves on Mt. Hood are shrinking, and caves on Mt. St. Helens are growing. Scientists wondered why those on Rainier are, or at least appear to be, in a sort of Goldilocks equilibrium. Now, a team has ventured into the labyrinth to create the best map of the caves to date, nearly doubling the length of mapped caves and revealing some of the caves' secrets to longevity. https://lnkd.in/g7Sjx4js

This stunning image, composed of several photographs taken just over a year ago on the island of Soneva Fushi, Maldives, reveals an unusual combination of colors. The image shows the almost vertical descent of the full moon, which occurs because the observer is near the Earth's equator. As the moon approaches the horizon, the air and aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere preferentially scatter blue light, causing the moon, which reflects the reddish sun, to appear red. An even more unusual aspect is the blue light on the beach, emitted by bioluminescent plankton. These tiny creatures emit a blue light to surprise and deter predators. In this case, the blue light is the result of waves containing plankton breaking on the shore.

There are two different species of scorpion in this photo. Can you differentiate the two? hint: chelicerae and tail segment size. The bark scorpion has narrower tail segments, and the giant desert hairy scorpion has bigger pinching arms

JULY FULL MOON - FULL BUCK MOON The full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by. Several other names for this month’s Moon also reference animals, including Feather Moulting Moon (Cree) and Salmon Moon, a Tlingit term indicating when fish returned to the area and were ready to be harvested. Plants are also featured prominently in July’s Moon names. Some of our favorites are Berry Moon (Anishinaabe), Moon When the Chokecherries are Ripe (Dakota), Month of the Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Raspberry Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe). Thunder Moon (Western Abenaki) and Halfway Summer Moon (Anishinaabe) are alternative variants that refer to the stormy weather and summer season.
