How to take the contracting plunge Without totally failing from day 1 (like I did) ↴ 1. Have a backup fund before you start - I spent mine on a trip to South Africa for a surprise bachelor party. Oops. 2. Check the market is rife with opportunities in your field - I quit at literally the lowest market point in Splunk history. High Five. 3. Understand what you are doing - I thought quitting my job meant freedom, apparently you still need money. I'm the best at this. 4. Accounting is harder to deal with than trying to remove a family of racoons burrowing under a listed building. No matter who you hire, you will have to learn how it works anyway. I can recommend a good one now after trying 3(DM me). 5. Make sure you have relationships with the right people - everything over the last few years has only been possible because of who I met along the way. So if you're reading this, thanks. If you’re on the fence, just do it. Worst case scenario you end up back where you are now. PS - after 5 years of doing this + starting a second company, I know a thing or two.
