What an exceptional outcome of the review! My two most anticipated highlights: “market reforms to enable better outcomes, innovation and quality and says governments need to take a more active role in stewardship. This includes looking at payments based on outcomes rather than solely fee-for-service.” AND: “A quality and safeguarding system that monitors the entire market … including unregistered providers.”

In the news today the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) highlighted that many hospital staff are not equipped with the skills or support to meet the needs of patients with learning disabilities. With nearly one million adults in England living with a learning disability, it is time to hear the voice of those who experience the problems. OK, this was big! Some really important ideas outlined by the NDIS Review yesterday: - more foundational support for all people with disability, with individual supports built on top  - more mainstream early childhood intervention in particular, focused on school, home and early childhood centre settings  - an approach to planning that seems to revisit themes under the former NDIA CEO (overall package budgets vs line item-level decisions; a new model for assessments) Also important that scheme integrity and workforce development will be a focus of their final report. We welcome the debate on pricing, improved scheme regulation and registered vs unregistered providers to improve the quality of service delivery. Eric Jorgenson, founder of True North Disability Planning, will speaking on Day 1 of the conference about navigating the journey from diagnosis to adulthood when your child has a disability in the US. What to do, when to do it, and why it matters.

Y’day the Report from the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) was handed to the Governor-General. This is important for buildings because: 👉 The DRC intersects with Buildings (new build & existing) in several ways. 👉 Will affect mandatory requirements through the National Construction Code & Statutory Planning (enforcement of current codes aligned to DDA1992, ratcheting up standards & any new incoming requirements) 👉 Buildings classes....Residential & workplace & education buildings, and any building offering any service to the public....even cafesLivability, resilience. 👉 Mainly affects: public access, fire egress, WC & Kitchen adaptions (cooking), floor levels (insulation upgrades), types of energy efficient homes eg townhouses 👉 Behind the times, work to be done - Many ppl with disabilities (mobility, hearing & vision impairments) are still locked out of buildings or are at higher risk (than people with no disabilities) in buildings due to ineffective enforcement of DDA & NCC codes. For children this means reduced access to education & social opportunities. For adults this means reduced work & social opportunities. Also many ppl with disabilities are stuck living at inappropriate care settings due to non-compliant residential building stocks. Often young people with disabilities are living in aged-care facilities. 👉 The DRC findings will influence building regulations. 👉 Cost-savings can be made if the timing of building adaption work(s) are coordinated. Adaptions for access can be coordinated with energy efficiency upgrades (thermal shell performance, ventilation & moisture control inc. wet spaces like shower rooms & laundry, & electric appliances including kitchen/cooking). Coordination creates opportunity for climate-ready energy-efficiency upgrades. There are cost savings to be had if adaptions for DDA are coordinated with energy efficiency upgrades. Together, these upgrades increase social and climate change resilience & equity.
