Everyone remembered the Nilla Wafers and taco nights.
Had the honor of attending a celebration of life for a 99- and 103-year-old couple who passed within a year of one another.
As I didn’t know the couple well, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the service or to be as deeply moved as I was by the stories that were shared.
I was struck by how much of my time I spend thinking about things that won’t make much of a difference in the impact I make during my short time here.
As I think about the legacy I leave, I will look to Marg and Lloyd for the example they set.
My takeaways:
• What their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren remembered most was their love, the way they lived their lives, and how they treated others.
• Memories were mostly about quality time spent with family (often over tacos and Nilla wafers). Traditions matter.
• What they said mattered much less than what they did.
How does this relate to my approach to work and life?
• The relationships I build along the way are worth far more than the title or the paycheck.
• The traditions we create don’t have to be Instaworthy, they just have to be real.
• The moments matter. Between coworkers, friends and families. Take the time, make the connections. Everyone wins.
