I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic Grant Writing for Small Business workshop on October 10th, hosted by the Algiers Economic Development Foundation (AEDF) in New Orleans. The session, delivered by Hamilton Simons-Jones of ResourceFull Consulting, was both insightful and engaging. It deepened my understanding of the essentials of grant writing, which is critical as I continue my role as a career consultant for Claire's Place Foundation, Inc., helping to grow our Work Proudly Program. A huge thank you to Kelsey Foster, Executive Director of AEDF, for organizing such an invaluable event and for bringing the community together. This experience reinforced the importance of continuous upskilling and networking. It’s these tools that enable us to not only stay relevant in our own careers but also to make a meaningful impact in the organizations and communities we serve. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 for educators and transitioning teachers looking for new paths. We had an engaged group with thoughtful questions that led to a deep discussion. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. I explained that recruiters are not there to find you a job—they are hired by companies to fill specific roles that align with the company’s needs. Understanding this helps you approach recruiters strategically. It’s about building relationships, knowing how to position yourself in line with the jobs they are recruiting for, and creating opportunities for meaningful connections. 𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. Before making a career change, it’s critical to understand the unique combination of your strengths, experiences, and aspirations. This clarity not only makes you more compelling to employers but also helps guide your job search. Tools like SkillScan and O*NET are excellent for identifying your strengths and aligning them with meaningful career opportunities. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. It’s not just about asking for referrals; it’s about building relationships by giving back. Saying thank you, offering testimonials, and helping others in their career journey strengthens your network and fosters lasting connections. 𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. This mindset shift allows you to see your career as an ongoing journey of growth. We emphasized the importance of work-life balance, creating a life you love, and ensuring that joy is a key part of whatever you do next.
