Mid-2023 a new Flood map for Miami-Dade County affected most new ground-up construction projects as the minimum elevation of the first level was required to be higher than what the zoning code said, making the maximum height practically lower. UNTIL NOW! And Believe it or not, they made a decision that makes sense! With this new code, we now have to figure out not one but three potential base elevations to measure the maximum height of our projects. Want to know more about it? Click on the reel below.

Another excellent result. A bigger and better replacement bridge is built in 10 months to replace the one destroyed by floods earlier this year. A project made more difficult by logistics due to the large distance from major towns. It’s #NationalRiversMonth, a time to highlight projects that are helping to keep rivers healthy, mitigate flooding, and deliver the clean, reliable #Water communities need to thrive. This highlight looks at the Red River in North Dakota, where the state is implementing a $1.16 billion project to strengthen the river’s reliability and resilience during prolonged drought. The centerpiece of the project is a 125-mile-long, 72-inch-diameter pipeline that will bring treated water from the Missouri River to the Red River, augmenting its supply as needed to serve more than 30 cities and rural systems. With program management, design and construction management services provided by Black & Veatch, the buried trans-basin pipeline and associated infrastructure will mitigate when completed costly water shortages for approximately 50% of North Dakota’s population and foster economic development region wide while supporting the #Sustainability of the Red River.

Repairing a house after a basement flood costs $43,000 on average. The price tag for infrastructure repairs can be much higher, putting additional pressure on often limited municipal resources. By incorporating CSA Group community water standards into development plans and bylaws, municipalities can improve the resiliency of their communities and better protect them from floods. Does your community have flood mitigation projects in need of funding? The Texas Water Development Board is now accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2023 Flood Mitigation Assistance grants. Applications are due to the TWDB January 8, 2024. Earlier submissions will receive more technical assistance from the TWDB. A total of $800 million in federal funding is available nationwide for flood mitigation planning, structure elevation, property acquisition, soil stabilization, drainage and stormwater projects, structural retrofitting, and more. I wanted to highlight this incredibly comprehensive, and compelling, story at E&E News by Miranda Willson. It’s great (not just because I’m quoted in it) because it shows how many builders’ and developers’ groups are pouring resources into passing state laws which will allow them to destroy their fellow citizens’ wetlands and build on them for their members’ private profit. They don’t concern themselves with how the water those wetlands used to hold could wreak havoc in the communities they leave behind when their project is done. Thankfully highlighted in this story is how damaged the Great Lakes and Mississippi River will become as a result. As states bow to builders/realtors and repeal protections for their states’ wetlands, the pollutants and sediments that the wetlands in those states used to filter out and the floodwaters they used to control will now largely run downstream into our nation’s largest waters.
