During a memorable press conference, HOF point guard Allen Iverson ranted, "We're talking about practice... we ain't talking about the game!" Put into safety context: Iverson (field/line employee) was upset when questioned about his practice (training) habits. As a franchise player (experienced employee), he didn't have the same appreciation for practicing (training) as the rookies (new hires). Safety culture, similar to team culture, requires buy-in from employees of all experience and tenure levels to ensure risk is mitigated while setting the standard. This is even more important as the workforce continues to diversify with multiple generations in the field/on the line, as noted in the EHS Today podcast below. What's your org doing to train employees and make sure everybody is going home in the same condition they left it? If you had to pause to think about it, let's review your strategy and see if KPA could be of assistance!

If you want to elevate your safety culture, it begins with understanding where it stands today. Where is yours right now ?
"SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU!" - WELL NO, NOT REALLY! We’ve all heard the phrase “Safety starts with you,” but is it really true? As a new employee, how can safety possibly start with me if I haven’t been given the proper training, tools, or resources to do my job? If while I turn up to do my job, I am surrounded by a number of unsafe conditions that I have no personal control over - how does it "start" with me? I think Safety, at its core, is a joint venture between the individual and the organization. And here’s the uncomfortable truth: the company sets the stage (or in the HOP world - the context). If safety isn’t embedded in the systems and support provided by an organisation, if it's not part of the way they do business, how can we ask employees to take full responsibility? The real question here isn’t where safety starts—but who lays the foundation. 🎧Tune in Monday to the latest episode of the Leading Safely Podcast where I will challenge this overused mantra and explore how companies must lead the charge in creating safe work environments. #Readyfortheconversation #leadingsafely

OSHA attorney at Ogletree | helping employers with OSHA inspections, citations, and trials nationwide | CSP | follow me for updates and OSHA defense strategies
I just finished doing a #podcast with Doug Fletcher - "What's the Hazard?" Immediate takeaways: 1. Doug is tremendously impressive. I told him, truthfully, he should get on the radio. I would tune in - his podcast skills (IMHO) are phenomenal. It was the quickest hour of my life. We started and all of sudden, we were done - one hour later! 2. In view of # 1, this was fun - there is nothing better than having an opportunity to talk safety with a true peer/professional who loves what he does - and, I can tell you, we both do 3. Tune in once it's released - some questions I was asked: - what would you do if you were hired by OSHA? - what are your views on plain view? - can non-supervisory employees get their own attorneys? - what are your thoughts on opening conferences? - how did you start handling OSHA matters? 4. I learn something new, probably every single time I speak with another safety professional; Doug provided me with an inside view of many things and I was soaking it up (he used to work at OSHA, which provides him with invaluable insight and experience) - you don't think I was the only person talking, do you? 5. This was one hour of two people discussing much of what they do, what they think, and sharing ideas and knowledge. And, why they love the safety profession. Nothing better than that! #OSHA #safety #Collaborate #JustTalk
