It’s no secret that I am a huge cheerleader for businesses in the Hutt, and retail plays a significant role in that. Today, I am excited to announce the launch of Hutt City Council's new programme aimed at bolstering retail safety and addressing the increasing instances of crime and anti-social behaviour in our city. In a significant move to support our retail sector, we have introduced the Kia Haumaru – Safer Centres Programme. Launched in July 2024, this initiative is designed to enhance staff skills and improve safety measures for retail businesses across Lower Hutt. Developed in collaboration with First Retail Group (FRG) and the New Zealand Police, the Kia Haumaru programme aims to improve the wellbeing and safety of retail staff and the general public. The programme offers free training to all customer-facing businesses in Lower Hutt, equipping them with the necessary skills and confidence to manage the risks associated with crime. Retail businesses across various sectors have been facing heightened challenges, including anti-social behaviour and theft. Additionally, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of vulnerable individuals in commercial areas, which businesses are keen to assist. The Kia Haumaru programme has been warmly received by these businesses as it aims to build capability, confidence, and guardianship, thereby reducing risks and enhancing responsiveness. This initiative ensures that Hutt City’s centres remain safe and welcoming places for visitors, workers, and residents. In addition to the training programme, the Council is introducing a Business Safety Support Fund, allocating $150,000 to help retail and hospitality businesses in Lower Hutt purchase essential safety equipment. This fund aims to provide businesses with the necessary tools to combat retail theft and anti-social behaviour, making their workplaces safer and more secure. Simple but effective measures such as safety mirrors, internal bollards, and CCTV cameras can play a crucial role in preventing theft and enhancing security. This funding initiative complements the Council’s substantial $3.5 million investment in the Long-Term Plan for a city-wide CCTV network, demonstrating a strong commitment to improving safety across Lower Hutt. Safety should be a shared responsibility between a business and the community, including the government. In this situation you have traffic safety concerns, lack of lighting, and programs/meetings being held to online because of safety issues. This pastor has a voice which seems to be ignored. Listening to him in the video, the pastor had a bigger concern of the safety and well being of people around his church than his just his church. I appreciate his concern. The local government needs to step in. They bear some responsibility to fix their own infrastructure to enhance the safety for their community members. In addition to the lighting, business/church owners who seem to become victims (in this case speeding cars) can work government and other groups to put up anti-vehicle barriers. Or step up enforcement activities for speeding vehicles. Lighting is integral to feeling safe and secure when walking in neighborhoods. Lighting reduces crime. Many studies show this. Safe, quality, and affordable housing is a human right!

When people talk about parking charges they think of the "poor" person who got it. The consequence to that person. Frustratingly, people rarely think about the difficulties caused by the actions of that person. It's right to sometimes take time to look at the other side of the coin. Think about those who have been affected by the person who put their own convenience over the rights or needs of others. I see and hear (and experience) this daily. People parking in residential bays to have a shorter walk to a stadium, shops or work, or even a shorter taxi ride to the airport. That resident can't park in their allotted space, may have to pay (again) for parking, can't unload their shopping, or may have a special space close to theri home as they are unable to walk far. Someone dumped their car in our staff parking at the office while they went on holiday, meaning that staff had to pay to park elsewhere, and get wet walking to the office. I have seen examples of vehicles parked blocking roads, pavements, and worryingly, even the entrance to a fire station. People parking on the slip roads to airports, or leaving their car in front of a small local business, taking up the space that one of their customers could use. Not a day goes by that I don't see someone parked over 2 bays, meaning that someone who needs that space can't use it, and in some cases, the operator is losing out on revenue. There are endless frustrations caused when parking rules are disregarded, but what I find most frustrating, and even angering, is when Blue Badge bays and Ambulance bays are abused. The images from this post are all from one site, an NHS walk-in centre and medical facility. Sadly, only a small selection of those that have been sent to us. I call on Governmnet to ensure there is a sufficient deterrent to dissuade this anti-social behaviour, to protect the most vulnerable in society and to ensure our sector can help people park where they need to.
