Finally, I felt like that bright kid in class... Today was day 2 of the #IASP2024 & the discussion around AI led the day. A keynote presentation by Nesta Paul Katende, Otic Foundation founder, really opened my eyes. There are Ugandans who are really REALLY passionate about AI!!! A Ministry of Finance representative asked about the applications of AI in SPORTS & I almost peed on myself out of excitement, wanting to answer this question before Paul took the floor. Now, here is my detailed take that I did not get to share... This is just part 1 of my answer, out of 4 parts... (Things we can do TODAY) 1. Player Development and Performance 📌 Personalized Training Regimens: AI can analyze athlete data, such as biomechanics, heart rate, and sleep patterns, to create tailored training plans. This ensures optimal performance and injury prevention. 📌 Skill Assessment and Feedback: AI-powered systems can provide real-time feedback on player performance, identifying areas for improvement and offering specific drills or techniques. 📌 Injury Prediction and Prevention: By analyzing historical data and current performance metrics, AI can predict potential injuries and recommend preventive measures. Platforms: 📌 Wearable technology: Smartwatches, GPS trackers, and heart rate monitors can collect data for analysis. 📌 Motion capture systems: These can analyze athlete movements to identify biomechanical issues. 📌 AI-powered coaching apps: These can provide personalized training plans and feedback. Examples: - OPTASPORTS SA Uses AI to analyze player performance and provide insights to teams and broadcasters. - CATAPULT SPORTS LIMITED Provides wearable technology and analytics for sports teams to optimize performance.

It is a cute and entertaining clip. But isn’t the personification actually part of the mentioned problem if not even the only reason why people can fear technology? Isn’t it possible that applying human or animal traits in the movemental behavior on robotics is actually the gateway to associate also „mental behavior“ and therefore the concept of good and bad? Do you remember the discussions around #spot, #bostondynamics doglike robot? A dog can be cute and your best friend and a dog can be dangerous and attack you. It is such an interesting topic and opens up so many questions and possibilities in design & robotics. I actually wrote my diploma thesis on that topic :)

Less than one month to go before this year’s Bay Area Maker’s Faire, and in this post, I would like to share a bit more about our presentation and ask again for corporate sponsors to participate.  When designing Robot Freedom, an educational presentation on robotics, we wanted to make robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) approachable to a mass audience in hopes of inspiring the creators within all of us. To achieve this, the core principles for our AI design were defined by kids (ages 9 and 12 at the time), namely, robots should have distinct personalities, emotions, curiosity and be first and foremost pieces of art.  Given these principles, the foundation of our framework is based on Stimulus Organism Response (S-O-R) Theory. Like Pavlov’s dog salivating at the sound of a bell, our robots learn and adapt as they experience outside stimuli and are always eager for more. The robot’s AI is driven by five personality traits that govern how they interpret and respond to stimuli. Central to the robot’s stimuli exploration is a sensor array of ten sensors ranging from sound to touch. When a robot receives a stimulus, it first processes the information based on its preset personality, then uses past experiences to choose a response based on its personality. These experiences are weighted based on the outcome of the robot’s actions allowing the robot to adapt responses to new stimuli. The robots can move, change visual effects, or talk using a chatbot. All the processing is run on a Raspberry Pi and will be available on GitHub.   If that piques your interest, join us!
