Recently the need for Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is increasing where developers are aiming to achieve improved projects' efficiency, through responsible selection of construction materials. Milieu EC has completed several LCAs for the purpose of LEED certification; LCA for 3building material categories has been calculated using the huge library of EPDs (Environment Product Declarations) available; EPD is used to calculate materials' respective environmental impacts. Below graph shows how material selection would achieve less environmental emissions to the environment; hence improving the overall construction life cycle. Blue represents the proposed case, Orange represents base case.

In the #builtenvironment sector, most of our designs are codified; there is a debate on whether design codes are $laws or guidelines. How can #designcodes assist us in developing #climateresilient infrastructure, and human settlements? This is what the Council for the Built Environment #ClimateChange Indaba will be unpacking today.

Even LEED projects need to have a defined boundary that confirms what IS in the scope of work and what is NOT. Often the LEED boundary for a project is simply the property line, but not always and not always for all credits. As the construction industry faces growing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (EPDs) are emerging as a crucial tool for transparency and sustainability. These independently verified reports go beyond carbon emissions, offering insights into a product’s broader environmental impacts and lifecycle. In a recent webinar, experts Jane Anderson, Simon Corbey, Frank Hovorka and Mark Lynn discuss the growing importance of EPDs in driving sustainable construction. Despite challenges in adoption, their increasing use worldwide underscores their vital role in shaping a greener future. We are excited to share our latest research paper, "Assessing and Mitigating Environmental Impacts of Construction Materials: Insights from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)," which has been published in the Journal of Building Engineering. In this study, we explore the environmental impacts associated with construction materials and how Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can provide transparent and reliable data to reduce those impacts. With the growing demand for sustainable building solutions, EPDs are critical tools to assess, compare, and mitigate the lifecycle impacts of materials used in construction. Key Highlights: In-depth analysis of various materials and their environmental footprints. Practical insights on how the construction industry can use EPDs for sustainability reporting. Recommendations for integrating lifecycle assessments (LCAs) to support green building certifications and regulatory frameworks. 👉 Dive into the full paper here: [https://lnkd.in/dctcPuMD] A big thanks to all the collaborators who made this work possible! Let’s continue to drive sustainability in construction. #Sustainability #EPD #GreenBuilding #LifecycleAssessment #Construction #Research #CircularEconomy #EnvironmentalImpact

Our new publication is out, and you have the opportunity to join us for our webinar Thursday the 9th of January 2025, from 11.00-12.00. At Green Transition Denmark we have prepared a new briefing paper: 'Building for the Future: Why EU member states must take ambitious steps in implementing the whole life carbon requirements in the EPBD'. A key element of the transition towards a more circular building and construction sector, is incorporating the concept of whole life carbon (WLC) into construction practice. This is now also a part of the newly revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which entered into force in May 2024. The EU has thereby taken the first step towards a greener, more climate-friendly and circular construction industry, however, we need to ensure ambitious national implementation of WLC requirements throughout the member states. Leading countries like Denmark, France, and the Netherlands are already paving the way by implementing national roadmaps with limit values and targets for CO2/m2/year, and more member states are set to follow. At Green Transition Denmark, we encourage the remaining member states to implement similar roadmaps no later than 2028. Get the briefing paper: https://lnkd.in/dwNmR5Rf And join our webinar about the implementation of EU’s new Whole Life Carbon (WLC) requirements, and tune into why and how an ambitious national implementation is both important and possible. This webinar offers a deep dive into the whole life carbon (WLC) requirements and explores strategies for implementation with key highlights from a Danish context.
