Parentification can make it hard for many Black women to connect with their parents. When a child takes on responsibilities beyond their years, it often leads to a lifelong pattern of sacrificing their own needs to fulfill caregiving roles. This can result in feelings of disappointment and resentment, making it difficult to maintain a close relationship with their parents and family. At Myers & Galloway Counseling, we provide a trauma-informed space for Black women to navigate these challenges. If you're a Black woman struggling with difficulties in your relationship with your family, schedule your free consultation today. Are you familiar with the term 'parentification'? Most people we talk to say they have never heard of parentification, but as soon as we explain what it means, they tell us it sounds like we're describing scenes from their lives. It's a concept close to our hearts here at Myers-Galloway Counseling. As specialists in this field, we understand the profound impact it can have, especially on Black women. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth This study, 'Girlhood Interrupted: The Erasure of Black Girls' Childhood,' echoes what we've seen firsthand. It highlights the heartbreaking reality of Black girls prematurely burdened with responsibilities well beyond their years, later resulting in Black women who are burnt out from taking care of everyone else for so long. At Myers-Galloway Counseling, we're not just aware of Black women's struggles due to parentification; we're passionate about empowering them to break free and reclaim their inner child. If you resonate with the struggles outlined in 'Girlhood Interrupted,' we urge you to reach out to us. Your story matters, and we're here to help you rewrite it. Black Girl Day Off is celebrated every year on October 11. This special day follows World Mental Health Day, highlighting the significance of mental health, particularly for Black women. It encourages Black women to take a mental day off to focus on their emotional well-being. It addresses the impact of stress as a precursor to chronic illnesses like heart disease, breast cancer, and more. Stress, compounded by racial and gender discrimination, can lead to a cycle of health and socioeconomic disparities. That makes this day crucial for awareness and self-care. Why We Love Black Girl Day Off revolves around its core values of self-care and celebration of self and community. It simply focuses on mental health. By setting aside time for rest and reflection, the day aims to promote healthier, more fulfilling lives for Black women. It underscores the necessity of taking regular days off to boost creativity, productivity, and happiness. FULL ARTICLE HERE: https://lnkd.in/gZ-eESgP.

Epidemiologist | Founder & Executive Director of The Thurman Perry Foundation | Advocate for Women & Girls
#KnowUs The Thurman Perry Foundation is a Black woman lead 501(c)3 organization that exists to combat the disadvantages that women and girls who have been impacted by incarceration face in society. As an organization that focuses solely on their needs, we aim to PRIORITIZE, DIGNIFY, and COMPENSATE this sensitive population. These three values guide our decision making and goals as an organization. We aim to DIGNIFY these women by giving them the support and resources to not only survive, but thrive and tell their story on their own terms to other people through our organization. Over the past 3 years we have met dozens of amazing women and girls from all walks of life. From ages 9 to 64. From half of the states across the nation. From several races, ethnicities, and genders identities. But they have all had one thing in common: having their lives affected by the American carceral system. Some of them have had articles or news broadcasts published about them. Many have dealt with the bias and preconceived notions associated with their incarceration or that of their parent. Often, their story is told FOR them. Not at TPF. Here we work as a conduit for their voices. We help them tell their story, on their own terms, and in their own way. https://lnkd.in/gMn__dmk
