Yesterday was International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD.) It aims to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. IDPwD is an opportunity to be part of creating an inclusive and diverse community for the 4.4 million Australians with disability. The Law Society has developed a checklist to provide guidance to law practices that want to be more accessible to clients with disability. The checklist is a helpful reference for firms so that clients with disability can more easily access the legal support they need and will also help people with disability find law firms that they feel comfortable with. It contains information to make your practice more accessible to people who have different needs relating to: ✅ Wheelchair/mobility access ✅ Vision impairment and blind ✅ Hard of hearing and deaf ✅ Neurodivergent ✅Neurological disorders Download our checklist here: https://ow.ly/taXs50QeReV #lawsocietysouthaustralia #law #legalprofession #IDPWD

Many individuals with disabilities face unique challenges that can impact their healthcare experiences. In #InDialogue Ep. 20, we interview disability advocates Drs. Lynn Ashdown and Caroline Bowman who speak candidly about their experiences navigating the healthcare system as providers and as patients living with disabilities. Their personal stories and examples bring a valuable, patient-centred perspective on these issues for physicians and non-physicians alike. Listen to the episode and find additional helpful resources on #CPSODialogue: https://lnkd.in/gzk2hqFK Dr. Ashdown shares how “as physicians, we often think about what happens in the doctor's office or in the hospital, but as someone with multiple disabilities, my life outside of the medical encounter is very much important in the medical encounter, and barriers to me receiving health care start long before I actually step into a hospital or a doctor's office." Dr. Bowman describes how physician fatigue is normalized and how it affected her as she began to deal with her disability. “I think we sometimes wear fatigue as a badge of honour in medicine and really talk about pushing through it. It was really hard to wrap my head around having fatigue and feeling like I was just getting more and more behind. The pushing through that I've really relied on for my whole life not only not working, but just making things so much worse. You can appear very normal at times, too. So it is harder to understand.” #DisabilityAwarenessMonth #AccessibilityMatters #InclusiveHealthcare

Disability Pride Month - Day 5 Image Description: A black and white graphic showing a person transitioning from a wheelchair to walking, with the text “ambulatory wheelchair users exist.” The graphic emphasizes that some wheelchair users can walk but still rely on wheelchairs for various reasons. Today, I spotlight ambulatory wheelchair users. This image highlights an often misunderstood aspect of disability: the ability to walk short distances does not negate the need for a wheelchair. Many ambulatory wheelchair users face skepticism and judgment when they use their wheelchairs. It’s crucial to understand that mobility aids are essential for many, even if they can walk at times. #DisabilityPrideMonth #AmbulatoryWheelchairUsers #MobilityAids #InvisibleDisabilities #DisabilityAwareness #AccessibilityMatters #EndAbleism
