Non-AIDS defining cancers (NADCs) are a major health concern for the aging HIV-infected population. While general cancer screening guidelines apply, such as HPV-DNA testing for cervical cancer, mammography for breast cancer, and FOBT, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy for colorectal cancer, approximately 24 lakh HIV-positive individuals in India are awaiting screening. The Madhya Pradesh State Aids Control Society, with support from Vishwanath Cancer Care Foundation, Karkinos Healthcare, MP Warehousing and Logistics Corporation, MP Online Limited, Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (MPSEDC), and HDFC Bank, has made significant progress by positively impacting nearly 3,500 lives. Neuroinflammation generated by HIV-infected microglia promotes dysfunction and death of neurons in human brain organoids Despite the success of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV, mild forms of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) persist. Research highlights that brain microglia are principal targets for HIV infection. Using advanced pluripotent stem cell-derived brain organoid models, it was found that HIV infection in microglia triggers significant increases in inflammatory chemokines (CCL2, CXCL10) and type I interferon-stimulated genes, even after ART treatment. Inflammation spreads to uninfected bystander neurons, leading to their dysfunction and death. Background: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. It can remain dormant in the individual throughout life. Th e manifestations of ocular involvement are similar to other infl ammatory eye conditions. It is crucial to make an early diagnosis and management in order to avoid complication. Objective: to describe the clinical characteristics and the results of the treatment of patients with ocular syphilis. Study design: observational retrospective study Method: Retrospective cohort of patients with ocular syphilis evaluated in an ophthalmology reference center in Colombia from March 2015 to February 2017. Results: Sixteen patients were diagnosed with ocular syphilis during the studied period. Four (25%) patients had involvement of both eyes, for a total of 20 eyes. Th ere were 11 (68.8%) men and 5 (31.3%) women. Th e mean age of presentation was 51.1 years (23-86 years). Four male patients were coinfected with HIV. Th e most frequent manifestation was panuveitis in eight eyes (40%). Six patients (37.5%) presented systemic dermatological fi ndings. Treatment included crystalline penicillin and systemic steroids. Th e mean follow-up was 16.2 months (12-21 months). Th e mean visual acuity improved from 1.01 ± 0.71 logMAR to 0.58 ± 0.64 logMAR aft er treatment. Conclusion: Syphilis is a rare cause of intraocular infl ammation. However, the incidence has been increasing in recent years in both HIV positive and HIV negative patients. My research, published in "Infectious Agents and Cancer," offers insights into the timing and risks associated with CCS among WLHIV. 🔍 Key Study Highlights: - 19% of women aged 15+ in South Africa are HIV-positive. - Time to the event of CCS among WLHIV begins around 19 years of age. - A significant correlation exists between CCS and WLHIV, with factors such as ethnicity, area of residence, and health insurance playing a role. 📈 The study's findings are crucial for policy recommendations to enhance CCS uptake among WLHIV and can guide health education programs to reduce cervical cancer risks. 📃Scientific paper: Definition, Burden, and Predictors of HIV-Associated Wasting and Low Weight in the OPERA Cohort Abstract: We aimed to describe the prevalence, incidence, and predictors of HIV-associated wasting (HIVAW)/low weight among people with HIV (PWH) in the United States. We conducted an observational, clinical cohort analysis, utilizing prospectively collected electronic health record data obtained from the Observational Pharmaco-Epidemiology Research & Analysis (OPERA(®)) cohort. HIVAW/low weight included a wasting or low body–mass index (BMI)/underweight diagnosis (ICD codes and title search) or BMI <20 kg/m(2). Prevalence was estimated among adult PWH in care from 2012 to 2015 and 2016 to 2020. Incidence from January 1, 2016, to October 31, 2021, was estimated using univariate Poisson regression among eligible PWH without prior HIVAW/low weight. Demographic and clinical predictors of incident HIVAW/low weight were included in multivariable logistic regression models, stratified by antiretroviral therapy (ART) experience. The period prevalence of HIVAW/low weight was 12% in both 2012–2015 and 2016–2020. Among 67,119 PWH without any prior HIVAW/low weight, 7% experienced incident HIVAW/low weight a median 64 months from HIV diagnosis. In multivariable regression models, similar predictor patterns were observed among ART-naïve and ART-experienced PWH without any prior HIVAW/low weight: lower odds of HIVAW/low weight with older age, female sex, Black race, and Hispanic ethnicity and higher odds with Medicaid.
