Strengthening patient engagement to improve health outcomes: today’s insights from Reuters Pharma 2024. At today’s conference we led a number of exciting discussions around patient engagement, including earlier adoption of the patient voice and developing a patient-centric approach to biopharma development to enhance patient outcomes. - There is a need to shift patient-centricity from a process driven by pharmaceutical industry needs to a far more collaborative and shared decision-making process driven by patient, treatment provider, and industry needs. - Patient involvement in clinical trial development is likely to become a regulatory requirement in the future—with the need for greater inclusivity and diversity. - Building meaningful and earlier partnerships with a patient co-creation model throughout the drug development process is likely to lead to better solutions and outcomes, and greater value for patients. Could a single clinical trial failure be a great success for the overall biopharma industry? I think so—but only if the company’s leadership is willing to stand by their press-release promises: “We’ll follow the science and do what’s right for the community which may include voluntarily removing the product from the market.” If Amylyx’s leadership makes an exclusively data-driven decision on Relyvrio’s future—and if they transparently and candidly communicate this decision and its supporting rationale to the public—then this will be a win for the industry at large, since it will help restore trust. Trials fail. Well-designed drugs can still reach unfortunate endings. You need risk in order to eventually have reward. Central to all of this, though, is trust. Trust that data drives decisions. Trust that drug developers are focused on profits through helping patients, not profits for profits’ sake. Trust that failure through well-designed trials and noble intentions is accepted as a price for innovation.
