February is National Cancer Prevention month, when we are encouraged to make healthy lifestyle choices and ensure we’re up to date on various health screenings. Another big step we can take is to understand our risk of hereditary cancers and our genetic response to various therapies. By sequencing your entire genome, the MyOme Personal Genome™ test can assess your personal risk, so you can speak with your providers to make the best decisions for your health. Novo Nordisk will collaborate with Harvard and the Broad Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop three new programs over the next three years to tackle #diabetes and #cardiac #fibrosis. The collaboration between Novo Nordisk, Harvard, and the Broad Institute is not new. The Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for #Genomic Mechanisms of Disease, where researchers mine genetic data to understand how genetic variants contribute to conditions like diabetes, was established in 2021 with a $47.5 million donation from the Danish #biopharma, maker of the popular #drugs Ozempic and Wegovy as well as numerous diabetes products. The most recent project seeks to study the genetic underpinnings of cardiac fibrosis, or scarring of the heart, and to identify #therapeutic targets for subtypes of Type 2 diabetes. Exciting news in the fight against sickle cell disease! The FDA has approved the first-ever CRISPR gene-editing treatment for this debilitating condition. This groundbreaking therapy, called Casgevy, offers a potentially curative option for patients suffering from sickle cell disease. Casgevy works by editing a specific gene that causes the production of abnormal red blood cells. These abnormal cells are the hallmark of sickle cell disease and lead to a range of painful and life-threatening complications. Clinical trials have shown Casgevy to be highly effective, offering patients the chance for a normal, healthy life. While this complex and expensive treatment will initially be available to a limited number of individuals, it marks a significant milestone in the fight against sickle cell disease. #CRISPR #lifescience

Q: "Does your research have possible benefits beyond #organ #transplantation?" A: "The research that we do on #TTV in #kidney transplants is of potential interest in almost the whole medical field. Interest in TTV is starting to grow because the #immunesystem influences so many areas. For example, we are beginning to see interesting data for #oncological diseases. The old-school drugs are very toxic and more or less burn most rapidly dividing cells in the body, targeting the tumour but also a lot of the body's other cells. A new, more effective way is to activate your own immune system by using immune modulators, and these will become more and more important in the coming years. Here, TTV may come into play to measure the strength of the patient's immune system and help determine whether he or she needs immune modulators to strengthen the immune system at an early stage to fight the #tumour." 👍 Did you enjoy these Q&A with our coordinator Gregor Bond? 👉 Follow us for more news about #ttvguide! #interview #EUproject #horizonEU #kidneyhealth #kidneydisease #kidneytransplant

Everything you always wanted to know about... Cell Death! A comprehensive review of distinct cell-death pathways providing insight into how aberrations in cell-death processes promote disease, as well as how modulating cell death may be helpful in therapies. - Super cool fact: it is estimated that a staggering 10^11 cells undergo programmed cell death each day in an adult human, which is equivalent to our entire body weight in the course of a year. - Cell death is required for the survival and fitness of multicellular organisms but must be tightly regulated to prevent disease. - An extensive understanding of cell-death signalling mechanisms has revealed opportunities to counter aberrant cell death in disease. - In the case of the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, the success story has been the development of the BCL-2 inhibitor Venetoclax for the treatment of certain hematologic malignancies. https://lnkd.in/eQ5_P4Gz #biology #research #cancerresearch #disease #science

HDSA San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Raises Funds To Improve the Lives of Everyone Affected by Huntington's Disease
“Somatic expansion” is a hot topic in Huntington’s disease research. Somatic expansion is a process in which CAG repeats lengthen in some cells during aging. It’s thought to control how early HD symptoms appear. A group of researchers from Toronto, Canada recently identified proteins that may play an important role in regulating this process. Understanding how these proteins regulate somatic expansion in Huntington’s disease may hold the key for unlocking therapeutics for CAG repeat diseases. 🧐Its' International Cystic Fibrosis Day! Did you know that cystic fibrosis (CF) is a rare autosomal recessive inherited disease linked to a mutation in the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator) protein gene? 🤔 It affects around 105,000 children and adults across 94 countries. Thanks to improved treatments and medical care, more than half of all people with CF are aged 18 or over and many can expect to live healthy and fulfilling lives into their forties and beyond. We help the community by developing digital tools for remote monitoring. 👉Stay tuned to learn more about our patient-centered initiatives! source : https://lnkd.in/gU5ds5Rc #cysticfibrosis #cysticfibrosisfighter #cysticfibrosisfoundation #cysticfibrosislife #cysticfibrosiswarrior #cysticfibrosisawareness #cysticfibrosisday #cysticfibrosisday2023 #children #patient #treatments #cysticfibrosistreatments #adscientiam #health #medicalcare #CFTR
