This news to me is not surprising from my clinical encounters and observations but also alarming to see the actual study figures on #nutrition and #obesity - Published yesterday 3.10.2024 on 'The Straits Times' "S’poreans want to eat healthy, but fewer than 1 in 4 knows what makes for a balanced meal" 1. Singaporeans largely recognize the importance of eating healthy, but most do not understand what constitutes a balanced meal. 2. Only 23 per cent of respondents were able to say that a balanced meal requires fruit and vegetables, protein and carbohydrates, said FPG when it released on Oct 3 the findings of the study conducted by NielsenIQ. 3. A new study has also found that some parents are willing to trade off nutrition for tastiness and convenience in their children’s meals, so that the children eat enough and mealtimes are fuss-free. 4. Four in 10 meals that parents prepared in a week had processed food, regardless of income level, the study found. 5. Seven in 10 parents surveyed said taste is the deciding factor for what makes a good meal, and that getting their children to not be picky and to eat enough was their biggest concern. Respondents said giving their children food they like – such as nuggets, sausages and fries – would help them finish their meals without fuss. “Sometimes the belief is that the two cannot match... it tells us that there are some fundamental gaps in understanding (of nutrition)" Makes one wonder: - Where's the gap in the #healtheducation - Childhood nutrition is compromised from the lack of knowledge? Is it a lack of #parenting attention and #behavior towards achieving a nutritious diet for the child? - On a #communityhealth level, could there be improvements in the local hawker food stalls and food options to demonstrate a healthy plate sign? - The 4th point draws attention to 'regardless of income' with relation to unhealthy food choice. #socialdeterminantsofhealth addressed. The parents of today's children will be mainly in the age ranges of 30-40 years old. Given the government's initiatives over the years in this generation of education, access to healthy food and information makes me think of the individual's #healthbeliefs and #healthmotivation to demonstrate this result. This requires a #mindset change. In the #healthscreening work I take pride in, I take care in addressing 'Page 1 ' as I describe to my health seeking client at the health review- The person's bio composition analysis. This preludes to the blood test and scan results. From my experience, this resets and/or re-educate the principles of health, health education basics, principles of #lifestylemedicine and for me to explore and utilize #behaviouralchange to #healthcoach for a #personalisedmedicine experience with live coaching handwritten notes. 🙂 #health #medicine #preventivehealth #coaching #mindset #behaviour #psychology https://lnkd.in/grHdYV2H
