Some great stats recently released from the @nationalrestaurantassociation. #Restaurants continue to be a bright spot in the US economy despite signs of a slowdown looming. "There were nearly 1.3 million unique job postings for restaurants and foodservice establishments over the past 12 months, according to Lightcast data, with 92,795 in July 2024. The pace of job openings remains solid despite these data trending lower over the past two years, with the labor market continuing to soften. For instance, the number of unique job postings in the sector peaked at 168,100 in April 2022. . Between July 2023 and July 2024, the bulk of these unique job postings were in limited-service and full-service restaurants, with 691,819 and 567.006 postings over the past 12 months, respectively. The top occupations being recruited at restaurants and food service establishments over the past year were food service managers, fast food and counter workers, supervisors of food preparation and serving workers, wait staff, cooks, and hosts and hostesses, among others." Restaurant employment registered a modest gain in April. Eating and drinking places added a net 6,600 jobs in April on a seasonally-adjusted basis. That came on the heels of stronger gains in February (25,100) and March (28,500). Although April represented the third consecutive increase in restaurant jobs, growth was uneven in recent months. On average during the last 6 months, eating and drinking places added less than 8,000 jobs each month. That compares to an average monthly gain of more than 27,000 jobs during the previous 6 months (May 2023 to October 2023). Despite the recent slowdown, the trendline remains modestly positive, which means the industry workforce continues to expand beyond pre-pandemic levels. As of April 2024, eating and drinking places were 40,000 jobs (or 0.3%) above their February 2020 employment peak. #restaurants #employment #hiring #jobs #economy For more information, see the National Restaurant Association post from Bruce Grindy: https://lnkd.in/ezh_yruT

After a soft patch to begin the year, restaurant job growth started to regain some footing in recent months. Eating and drinking places added a net 24,600 jobs in May on a seasonally-adjusted basis. That represented the third time in the last four months that the industry added at least 24,000 jobs, which is roughly on par with the average monthly job growth during 2023. On a non-seasonally-adjusted basis, eating and drinking places added more than 380,000 jobs in April and May. That puts restaurants on track to add more than 500,000 seasonal jobs this summer, according to National Restaurant Association projections. Restaurant job growth was choppy in recent months, but overall employment levels continue to climb above pre-pandemic levels. As of May 2024, eating and drinking places were nearly 69,000 jobs (or 0.6%) above their February 2020 employment peak. For the full post from my colleague Bruce Grindy, see https://lnkd.in/eEWJfPGY.

" As one of the largest employment industries in the US, restaurant hiring is always an important number to look at for overall job health. In August, eating and drinking places made up about 1 in 5 jobs created. We're glad this industry is still thriving. #R365 #RestaurantTech #HelpingRestaurantsThrive #RestaurantIndustry #JobGrowth

Positive trends in #job growth in the #restaurant industry, particularly in quick-service concepts. This tracks with what I've seen in the recruiting environment as well: high demand for quick-casual talent BUT continuing to be a deficit when it comes to candidates. Massachusetts in particular is back to pre-pandemic levels of job growth and openings, but the decreased talent pool continues to be a challenge. If you're a Manager in a successful quick-casual concept, YOU are in demand!

From my colleague Bruce Grindy: Restaurant employment resumed its upward trend in February. Eating and drinking places added a net 41,600 jobs in February on a seasonally-adjusted basis. That was a solid improvement from a decline of 11,700 jobs in January and represented the strongest monthly increase since January 2023. On average during the last 4 months, eating and drinking places added 9,000 jobs. That was well below the average monthly increase of 30,000 jobs during the first 10 months of 2023. Job growth was choppy in recent months, but industry employment remained above pre-pandemic levels. As of February 2024, eating and drinking places were 31,000 jobs above their February 2020 employment peak. #jobs #hiring #employment #restaurants #economy https://lnkd.in/eEWJfPGY

Job growth in the restaurant industry regained momentum in recent months, with September’s payroll expansion representing the largest monthly increase in more than two years. Eating and drinking places added a net 69,400 jobs in September. That followed upward-revised gains of 29,900 jobs in July and 37,500 jobs in August. In total for the third quarter, eating and drinking places added a net 136,800 jobs. That represented the largest quarterly employment growth since the third quarter of 2022 (+196,900 jobs). The third quarter’s resurgence was also a solid improvement over the second quarter, when employers added fewer than 8,000 positions. It’s important to note that preliminary employment reports have been volatile and subject to sizable revisions in recent months. However, the latest readings suggest that restaurant operators continue to have a healthy demand for employees, and that the second quarter’s softness was not the beginning of a broader downturn. As a result of the solid gains in recent months, the gap between the industry’s current staffing counts and pre-pandemic levels continues to widen. As of September 2024, eating and drinking places were 179,000 jobs (or 1.5%) above their February 2020 employment peak. Restaurant job growth has been uneven recently, with modest gains in April after stronger increases earlier this year. Despite this, a rise in job openings indicates solid demand for workers. Dive into the latest BLS data and what it means for the industry here: https://lnkd.in/eX25uT2Z

Restaurant employment declined for the second time in the last three months, as the recent softer sales readings appear to be impacting the labor market. Eating and drinking places cut a net 3,100 jobs in June on a seasonally-adjusted basis. That followed downward-revised readings in both April (-7,200) and May (+11,200). In total during the 2nd quarter, eating and drinking places added just 900 jobs. That represented the weakest quarterly employment performance since the 4th quarter of 2020, when the industry shed more than 285,000 jobs in the face of the delta variant of COVID-19. Despite the recent slowdown, the industry workforce remains slightly above pre-pandemic levels. As of June 2024, eating and drinking places were nearly 36,000 jobs (or 0.3%) above their February 2020 employment peak.
