The reality of starting as a Virtual Assistant When I first stepped into the virtual assistant world, I had a mix of excitement and nerves. I had done my research, taken courses, and followed and connect with other successful VAs online. It looked like the perfect way to work remotely, set my own schedule, and make an impact. But as I got started, I quickly realized, there’s a big difference between knowing what to do and actually doing it. Here are a few things you should know before starting; 1. Finding clients takes time (and consistency). You would think that when you announce your VA business, clients would come knocking. Spoiler alert🚨they won't. You have to put yourself out there, network, market your skills, and prove your value. The key to this is #Consistency. Even when it felt like no one is noticing, showing up consistently will make all the difference. 2. Imposter syndrome is real. At first, you will doubt your qualifications. But you have to learn that confidence comes from ACTION. You have valuable skills already, you just need to trust yourself and keep learning along the way. 3. Small wins matter. That first client, that first positive testimonial, that first time someone refers you, those moments fuel the journey. It’s easy to focus on what’s not happening fast enough, but celebrating small wins keeps the progress going. What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting your freelance or VA journey? As I look back on my journey as a virtual assistant, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences that shaped my path. From the early days of taking on small projects to now running VA Services by Ella and coaching the next generation of VAs, it has been an incredible ride. I am reminded of the one piece of advice that I always share with beginners VA—and a mantra that has served me well and my team: “Always underpromise and overdeliver.” In the world of virtual assistance, it can be tempting to align your efforts with the client’s budget or the project’s scope. But here’s the truth: Never underestimate the power of exceeding expectations. Even if a client’s budget seems modest, never let that dictate the level of effort you invest. Approach every task with your A-GAME. Go above and beyond, and watch its impact on your relationships and reputation. It is not just about meeting the minimum—it is about setting the bar high and consistently surpassing it. Delivering more than expected builds trust, a reputation that stands out in a crowded market, earns referrals and ultimately helps you grow in your career.
