Primary distribution systems consist of feeders that deliver power from distribution substations to distribution transformers. A feeder usually begins with a feeder breaker at the distribution substation. Many feeders leave substation in a concrete ducts and are routed to a nearby pole. At this point, underground cable transitions to an overhead three-phase main trunk. The main trunk is routed around the feeder service territory and may be connected to other feeders through normally-open tie points. Underground main trunks are possible-even common in urban areas, but cost much more than overhead construction. It is crucial for employers and workers to be aware of the risks associated with electrical work and to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety. When Texas engineers designed for Pennsylvania, they forgot one thing—it gets cold here! I spent the better part of a year fixing this oversight. TWICE! The company I worked for had compressor stations and well pads all across Pennsylvania. When the temperature dropped, the mix of condensate and water flowing through could freeze and block the pipe. So, to prevent freezing, crews installed temporary glycol heaters…and serviced them during the winter. The cost of deploying heaters hit the budget, increased downtime, and decreased overall productivity. So, our team looked at the challenge from a new angle. Why react each season with a temporary fix when a permanent solution could save time, money, and stress? The permanent solution? Heat Tracing. We could install a flat electrical wire along the pipes and around the valves to provide enough heat to not freeze. Wrap the wire in insulation–toasty warm pipes! So, for months I traveled to 100+ remote sites. I engineered the specs for the install. Then a crew applied the heat tracing later. My Boss gave me the project in May and wanted it done by October when it started getting cold. It wasn’t easy, but we did it. Then, the company bought another 100 sites in an acquisition, so I did it again the next year. 😦 Honestly, I didn’t mind the work at all. It was repetitive but improved ops while lowering cost. This is the work I love doing. From huge corporations to medium-sized construction businesses, “figuring it out” is what I do best. Have you ever done a job so well, you had to do it twice?
