Let’s talk about Food Security 🥦🫐🍓 1 in 5 kids experience food insecurity at home. School breaks can be a time of uncertainty and stress for some families. This Spring Break, over 8000 meals will be distributed across seven school sites. KidSafe aims to fill the gaps by providing daily nutritious meals, take-home groceries, and unlimited snacks. Food security forms one of the core focuses of our programming. We believe every child deserves the nourishment and opportunities they need so they can thrive. Across the country, summer traditions mean picnics and barbecues. But for some families, summer highlights the challenge of food insecurity. Many families that rely on free or reduced school-provided meals struggle to feed their children when school is out of session during the summer months. During these months, 30 million children face unreliable access to nutritious meals, as reported by Feed the Children. Ensuring every child has healthy meals is vital. Food insecurity has increased in the U.S. A child’s brain needs food even when school is not in session. A Federal-State food summer program is still not in all States. No govt program is perfect, but some programs need to be improved while they are actively serving essential human needs. I met hungry kids during an after school tutoring program. I knew multiple legal families of 5 all living in one room of somebody else’s trailer. You might not notice the difference in hunger in behaviorial terms right away. But once you see one 6 year old boy not playing with friends after a free supper but instead going to the cook and asking in earnest for one more pear and then another and then another.. And see his RELIEF and little smile each time he gets a pear… Then you know at your depth that hunger in our country is harming developing brains and young lives. Second Harvest & others also need support as food shelves report heavy use now. Having this Federal-State partnership helps fill in some of the gaps. I am aware this program has some administrative frustrations, but a child in our country should have enough food to be playing, dreaming, and learning- & not worrying about food. Over a dozen States have opted NOT to partipate even though the Federal govt pays the lion share of the cost. It came to be from a bipartisan effort. Our people care about hungry kids. Taking care of kids’ hunger is a family value we all grew up learning. We all do better when we all act as the best versions of ourselves. https://lnkd.in/gHiyVacv

Help Us Fight Food Insecurity in Texas Did you know that nearly 4 million Texans struggle with food insecurity? That's about one in every eight residents, facing a daily challenge to find enough food for a healthy, active life. Our PB&J Days model shows how we can make a real impact together. If just 47,619 people contribute $20 each, we can make enough PB&J sandwiches to make a significant difference. This represents less than 1% of our state’s population coming together to fight food insecurity. One sandwich may seem small, but it can be the first step toward discussions to provide greater assistance and support for those in need. It all starts with a sandwich. Join us in making a difference. Together, we can solve this. To learn more about how you can start a PB&J Day in your area or support us directly in San Antonio, please go to our website, pbandjdays.com. #food #SpreadKindness #pbandjdays #MakeADifference #help #service #homeless #endhunger

🍲 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗗 = 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟 👨🎓 Our food & wellness programs form the very backbone of support that disadvantaged students need in order to attend school. For many families living with food insecurity, this program makes the difference between sending their children to class, or out to work to help put food on the table. In the next few posts, we’ll examine the impact of this crucial program, from daily school meals to food banks that have been developed with a laser focus on families living with the direst food insecurity. In total across all our food programs last year ... 🍚 66 tons of rice 🍗 13 tons of meat 🥕 17 tons of vegetable ... were consumed. That’s a whole lot of nutrition going where it’s needed most! Watch the video to see where our food program first began: daily meals, available to the +700 students at our rural school locations. Because with full tummies, kids can stay in class and focus on the lesson. Because Food = School … and #schoolistheanswer 💛

Non sibi, sed suis While resources are provided for food on-campus, there are still segments of students that experience difficulties with accessing food. As a result, a trio of students formed Students Against Food Insecurity (SAFI), which has partnered with various organizations and departments to distribute over 3,500 pounds of food to the Tulane community. Learn more about the efforts and positive changes SAFI has brought to Uptown. 📰: bit.ly/4clvvgz

Interesting read.
From a young age, children are learning about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods, rather than ‘nutritious’ and ‘non-nutritious” eats. The labels we give food create a novelty around them, particularly when these so-called ‘bad’ foods are used as rewards for children for doing ‘good’ deeds; a rather confusing reward system in which children are encouraged to do ‘good’ things in order to receive what they understand to be ‘bad’ foods.
