These are such practical examples from our daily routine and by promoting inclusion in these areas we can actually inspire others & make a difference ✨

Heather Hoff shares an observation understood by too many women and too few men in the nuclear power industry. A photo of the Diablo Canyon Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) shop shows about 90 people. Ten are women. Heather's observation: Women are severely underrepresented. Only 13% of the workforce at the site is female despite a hiring spree. 🤔 Her colleague's response: "... hiring the best for the job is a more important issue. It is a nuclear plant." 😳 Unpacked: 1. Men are "the best." 😂 2. Men are most capable of operating and maintaining a nuclear power plant. 🙀 3. Hiring decisions that reflect a diverse population are a less important issue. 🙄 What's at stake: 😧 The nuclear power industry faces a dire workforce shortage. 😊 Inclusive workplace cultures will be vital to recruiting and retaining talent. 🤯 Exclusive Nuclear Bro attitudes create workplace climates that are unwelcoming to some of the best, most tenacious and resilient talent in the industry. Bottom line: 🚨 We urgently need an inclusive "all hands on deck" approach to achieve climate goals, meet growing demands for energy, and protect national security interests. ❗ Further attrition of women from the nuclear industry is detrimental to the Nation and the Globe. p.s. The 13% of women in Diablo Canyon's workforce may include corporate support (legal, financial, human resources, communications, etc.) and administrative staff. If so, the percentage of women in STEM fields is likely even lower. Despite decades of study, programs, and policies to achieve gender parity, under-representation of women in STEM fields remains a persistent problem - caused in large part by intransigent gender stereotypes, implicit bias, and notions of who is "the best" for a STEM job.
