Have you noticed that more and more, artists are stopping their shows to help people in the crowd? Our CEO, Professor Chris Kemp, has commented that “Seeing artists getting involved in crowd safety is undoubtedly a positive trend. But if they believe the whole show is about them, that is when you have a challenge it. The more you plan and collaborate, the more you can mitigate the risks” In the European Festival Report (p53-55), our renowned associates, Pascal Viot and Morten Therkildsen MSc, rethink ‘show stop’ procedures. TL;DR: Limited resources → creative problem solving → innovative solutions that teach us more than we thought possible. True in the theater world, true just about anywhere 😉 If my current play Next/Level had a big fancy budget, here’s what I’d probably be investing in: a professional-grade elevator set (with real walls! and buttons!), professionally made props like fake beverages for a scene at a bar, and a large supporting cast for two montage scenes. I’m sure it would have been awesome. But since I don’t have that kind of resourcing right now, my team and I have gotten super creative in our problem solving – and I actually love where that takes us. It helps me appreciate that in a world constantly bombarding us with quick fixes and solutions-for-just-9.99-a-month, we often take fundamentals for granted or miss out on thoughtful, innovative solutions. We’ve spent way more time than we would have otherwise considering the exact angles of our makeshift elevator set pieces (Ikea clothing racks with moving blankets FTW) and in doing so, dug deeper into how we each perceive the play’s setting and why it matters. In lieu of an extensive supporting cast, we got creative with a) one supporting player capable of playing nine (yes, 9️⃣ ! ) different characters in one scene and b) using audio clips creatively in a way that I think is even better than the vision I originally wrote into the script. And the fake beverage props? Let’s just say that I could now add “making fake wine with Jello” to my LinkedIn skills 🤓 Those props mean so much more to me now than if I’d just ordered them ready-made – and now when I do invest in professional-grade items for creative endeavors, I appreciate them far more than I did before. I’m excited to continue growing my upstart theater production skills and seeing where lessons like this one take me - and how I can apply them to the rest of my professional life. Next/Level opens on July 11 with five performances through July 21! We'd love to see you there: https://lnkd.in/eHE2pMan #capfringe24 #capitalfringefestival #newplay #creativesolutions #innovation

Long live TCM!
It was 30 years ago today... April 14, 1994 From Founder Bill: I was a stand-in at the morning run-through for our launch in Times Square. The MC - mic booming - introduced me as, among other things, "the director of the 1970 classic, 'Love Story,' Arthur Hiller!" Passersby must have thought I'd either had a lot of work done or directed "Love Story" when I was 6. They were extra confused minutes later when that same voice said, "She starred in such films at Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Welcome to the stage, Jane Powell!" and I walked back up. That was an incredibly fun time for all of us. Many thanks to Ted Turner and all of my colleagues who were there that day and those who came after me and built such and incredible channel and brand, of which we're all so proud. Here's looking at you, TCM! #longliveTCM #notjanepowell Bill Burke
