The importance of learning Microsoft Excel is revealed only during articleship

𝟒 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲, 𝟎 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 After completing a 4-year degree in 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, I realized something crucial: universities focus on theoretical subjects but neglect to teach essential industry skills. Just take a look at the course list below from my degree program— 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 like 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥, 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬, 𝐗𝐞𝐫𝐨 or 𝐒𝐀𝐏, which are commonly used in the real world. We, as students, pay heavy fees and dedicate years to education, but how many of us leave with 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 that can make us job-ready from day one? Universities don't emphasize skill development, professional tools, or certifications. They offer courses like "Principles of Accounting" and "Financial Management," but fail to train us on 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 that every employer demands today. Why is that? Why spend four years and not even one month on tools that are essential in the workplace? This is exactly where the 𝐆𝐚𝐩 lies between 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲. If universities don't start incorporating 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 in their curriculum, students will continue to struggle in the job market, and companies will keep searching for job-ready talent elsewhere. How much Excel is ACTUALLY required before starting your articleship? A lot of people will tell you that you need to learn everything from shortcuts to VBA (and I still laugh whenever I hear this) As a student who has just cleared CA Intermediate, I’d say if you know LOOKUPs, data validation, INDEX/MATCH and Pivot Tables (along with some basic formulas like CONCAT, IF, etc.) - you are good to go. Majorly, this can be learned through any basic Excel course. Two of the best courses that I have seen are: 1. Udemy (English): https://lnkd.in/gvikCf3R 2. Skill91 (Hinglish): https://lnkd.in/g-Wq2_34 (No paid promotion here, just honest recommendations) But, but, but - Harsh, I see these CA articles being so proficient in Excel? Didn’t they learn everything before joining? 👉 See, some might have. But almost everyone around me – no one had the shortcuts memorised and no one could operate Excel without a mouse when they had just joined the firm. With practice, and literally breathing Excel in and out for work, they just got better with time. I could give you a long list of Excel formulas and ask you to learn them. You could, but there is no real need. I have picked up most of the formulas while actually working. So, if you’re looking to learn Excel, make sure to learn the basics. Hello Connections, As I progress through my CA Articleship, I have come to realize that how indispensable “Microsoft Excel” is in our daily tasks. Embracing excel as a fundamental part of our training is crucial. It is more than just a software- it is a key component of our professional toolkit. If you have good command on excel you will also get good opportunity in your firm as compared to others. As ICAI provide 90hrs IT training before starting articleship, we should take it seriously. As I was not aware of importance of this training I took it very casually. But by God’s grace I haven’t faced many challenges in excel because I got good seniors they helped me in using techinal formulas and all. This depends on luck whether you get that type of seniors or not. So, just want to say take this training seriously. 🌟 Hello everyone! I'm thrilled to share that I have successfully completed my 15-day Information Technology Training (ITT) program! This journey has been an incredible learning experience, equipping me with essential skills and knowledge for my upcoming articleship. ● Excel Mastery: The initial days were dedicated to Excel, where we covered everything from basics to advanced features. I learned about: ▪︎Conditional formatting ▪︎Extracting data using Index and Match functions ▪︎Pivot tables and slicers ▪︎Various mathematical and statistical functions, and various other tools. ● Tally Prime Proficiency: Next, we dived into Tally Prime. Here, I gained a comprehensive understanding of: ▪︎Different types of vouchers and ledgers ▪︎Recording transactions and analyzing their impact on financial statements ▪︎Payroll management, GST filings, TDS entries ▪︎Implications of statutory dues on period-end statements ● Database Skills with Access: We then moved on to Access, where I learned about: ▪︎Databases and various data types ▪︎Importance and use of database tools ▪︎Extracting and analyzing data using various tools ● Auditing with IDEA: We explored IDEA, an auditing software, which provided practical exposure to extraction and analysis of data through various auditing techniques. Here we learned: ▪︎Aging analysis ▪︎Detecting duplicates and abnormal items ▪︎Ratio analysis ● MS Office Proficiency: Lastly, we polished our skills with MS Office tools such as MS Word and MS PowerPoint. This training has significantly boosted my confidence and preparedness for my articleship. Training in Tally holds immense importance for students as it provides them with the essential expertise needed to succeed in the realm of accounting and finance. Acquiring knowledge in Tally enables students to effectively handle financial data, generate reports, and evaluate financial data. This not only enhances their job prospects but also bolsters their confidence in managing intricate financial responsibilities. Investing in Tally training for students proves to be a valuable asset for their future career advancement and prosperity.

I am waiting for my results. What can I do? (5 pointers mentioned below) If you are not preparing for the other group, please make sure to dedicate 2-4 hours a day to do the following: 1. Prepare Your Resume: Note down all the relevant points from 9th grade to college (if you had a regular college) that you could include in your resume. Preparing your resume is perhaps the first thing you should do. You will need to leverage every point you can. (Top firms have already started their pre-result drive.) 2. Complete Your ITT and OC Trainings: Attend the batches wherever you can. Just make sure you do not take them lightly. It is mandatory to complete both trainings before being eligible to start Articleship. (Companies could let you go even if you have a good profile but the trainings are pending.) 3. Improve Your English: It is okay to fumble and not have perfect communication skills. But what is not okay is not making an attempt to improve them. Make sure you participate in your OC and try to speak in English regularly. (Top firms overlook proper structuring, fluency, and grammar if you can articulate your thoughts properly.) 4. Work on Excel: You might want to work on SAP, Tally, PowerBi, etc., but these are all secondary software to learn after Excel. Most organizations spend a significant amount of time on Excel, and knowing functions like VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, XLOOKUP, etc., will only help you. (These functions are often asked about in interviews.) 5. Spend Time Networking: Reach out to your seniors who work in the fields you desire to join. They can guide you best and act as personal mentors during times of confusion. Nowadays, there are a lot of conferences happening, so make sure you attend them. (LinkedIn can also be a huge help here.) These pointers could give you an advantage over others for CA Articleship, as many won't even start until the results are out. You could also try your hand at other things such as content creation, freelancing, etc. It is your call how you want to utilize your remaining time. U can also take courses available on SKILL91.
