Is it still worth investing in multilingual education in early childhood (especially in the age of AI tools of all kinds)? Despite the numerous benefits, it also comes with pitfalls. From my observation, I will mention 2: 👉 the pronaunciation of some vowels in the native language can be incorrect, 👉 the child is initially slower in formulating sentences also in the mother tongue. There are certainly more of these challenges, but I see the above mentioned ones as the most significant so far. And as for the investment itself, I still consider it (despite the digital AI age) as one of the best ones. #multilingualism

The International Science Council (ISC) recently published a guide for policy makers: Evaluating rapidly developing technologies including AI, large language models and beyond. This builds on high level principles already published from UNESCO, OECD, EU and UN etc. According to Peter Gluckman, ISC President, “In an era marked by rapid technological innovation and complex global challenges, the ISC’s framework for comprehensive and multidimensional analysis of the potential impacts empowers leaders to make informed, responsible decisions. It ensures that as we advance technologically, we do so with a careful consideration of the ethical, social, and economic implications”. These may be helpful to guide those developing Large Language Models (LLM) and Chatbots both inside organisations, national and international projects targeting scientific communities. I also found this article of interest published last week from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "A Global South Perspective on Explainable AI" by Jake Okechukwu Efforduh. This states: "A context-driven approach is necessary to translate principles like explainability into practice globally. These vignettes illustrate how AI can be made more trustworthy for users in the Global South through more creative, context-rooted approaches to legibility." "Among the first sets of influential international guidelines that have shaped AI policies globally is the Principles on AI by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Third in a list of five values-based principles, the OECD principle on transparency and explainability prescribes transparency and responsible disclosures around AI systems to ensure that people understand when they are engaging with them and can challenge relevant outcomes." Today, I had the privilege of speaking at the "Artificial Intelligence in the Media Space: Problems and Prospects" forum, hosted by the Department of Journalism and Translation Studies at Turan University, Kazakhstan. My talk focused on "AI in the Context of Media Literacy," where I explored the transformative role of AI in the media industry and its implications for media literacy. The intersection of AI and media literacy is crucial for navigating the digital age. AI technologies are reshaping content creation, distribution, and consumption, presenting new challenges and opportunities for media professionals and audiences alike. I extend my gratitude to Turan University for hosting this enlightening forum and to all participants for their engaging discussions. The journey towards media literacy in the age of AI is a collaborative one, and today's forum was a significant step forward. UPDATE: And here is a recording of my report: https://lnkd.in/db_t-W7f #AIInMedia #MediaLiteracy #DigitalTransformation #TuranUniversity

Congratulations to Dr Mike Perkins and Dr Jasper Roe FHEA (James Cook University Singapore) for the release of their new journal paper in a Q1 journal in March 2024! The newly published paper describes a methodological innovation in the analysis of qualitative data using Generative AI (GenAI) tools alongside traditional research methodologies to conduct inductive thematic analysis. The article titled “The use of Generative AI in qualitative analysis: Inductive thematic analysis with ChatGPT,” was published in the open-access Journal of Applied Learning & Teaching (Q1). The new method comprises two researchers conducting simultaneous analysis: one using traditional qualitative research approaches, and the other conducting the same analysis but with the support of GenAI tools, namely, the premium version of ChatGPT (GPT-4). 💡 Dr. Mike said of the research: ‘GenAI tools are now demonstrating their potential in supporting academic research. By using natural language prompts, these tools make research more accessible and help us discover patterns in large data sets that human researchers might miss. While they are powerful, we still propose some caution, given the challenges of AI hallucinations. Human intuition remains crucial for interpreting the findings. As academics start to embrace these new technologies, we need to find the right balance between GenAI and human expertise.’ Dr. Mike is the Head of the BUV Centre for Research & Innovation. His research focuses on GenAI tools, academic ethics, contract cheating, and performance management in public sector bodies. His co-author, Dr, Jasper is a former BUV faculty member who is now a Lecturer in Humanities and Head of Department, Language School. 📌 Read more about the research here: https://lnkd.in/grb383DV #BUV #Research #GenAI __ BUV Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI) 📧 Email: cri@buv.edu.vn 🌐 Website: https://www.buv.edu.vn/

This topic has been written about before but is worth discussing again; can we develop AI in a way that doesn't threaten small languages? The digital death of a language would be a huge cultural loss and would put non-English speakers at a disadvantage when using digital technology. It could also put these languages at risk in the real world. Cross-lingual transferred learning could be the answer. But to achieve it, we need to make sure that native speakers of small languages are actively included in the development of AI and LLMs. #AI #SmallLanguages #InclusiveAI #LLMs

Could AI be the key to unlocking a truly connected global community? That’s the future we explored on Day 1 at TEDAI Vienna during a workshop conducted in English and Norwegian, with Spanish, Icelandic, Swedish, French, and Arabic thrown into the mix - and I understood it all! Am I a multi-lingual phenomenon? Sadly, not quite… Led by Kristian Birgirsson and Andrey Schukin with Interprefy, we explored AI’s potential to break language barriers and connect the world through real-time AI translation. Discussing the opportunities and challenges ahead with Fatima Lundgren and Christian Mereiter made the session especially insightful. Day 1 of TEDAI Vienna was packed with inspiring panels and new ideas. 🔑 How to Leverage AI to Get Ahead of the Learning Curve – Key takeaway: AI can transform knowledge into actionable learning, making education a strategic asset and enabling organisations to generate revenue while fostering skill development. 🔑 Unveiling breakthroughs from the TEDAI Hackathon – The hackathon highlighted AI’s potential for positive change, with the winning team showing that AI can be a catalyst for innovation and social good when approached with purpose and expertise. 🔑 AI's Role in Accelerating Sustainable Economic Growth – Key takeaway: AI has the capacity to bridge the digital divide, creating profound impacts at both the macroeconomic and local levels. However, it's crucial to ensure that AI is deployed as a tool to enhance human potential, with careful consideration given to the collateral impacts during the transition. Before wrapping up, I wanted to share 3 recurring themes on AI that emerged throughout the day—take a look and dive into whichever piques your curiosity: 1. Authenticity 2. Digital twins 3. Data privacy and ethics Updates from Day 2 coming soon. Stay tuned! #TedAI #AI #Innovation #FutureSkills #Sustainability
