We’ll keep repeating our mantra that it’s so important to maintain ongoing due diligence, even on clients and customers who are up to date in payments, if you are extending significant credit and you are an unsecured creditor. Are payment terms becoming unilaterally extended by the debtor? Is there a trend you can’t afford to ignore? Are personal or corporate guarantors still ‘good for the money’ or have they divested themselves of assets such that the PG is worthless? Are you in as strong a position as you thought you were when you agreed to extend credit? Can you afford to ‘take the hit’? Lots to consider when assessing the actual strength and value of your debtor book. Forewarned is forearmed.
