Did you know that international standards play a role in national AI regulations? 💡 The Secretariat for the Brazilian-German Digital Dialogue and the EU-Brazil Digital Dialogue is excited to host a panel titled “Between the global and the local: the pros and cons of adopting international standards in AI regulation in Brazil” at the 14th Brazilian Internet Governance Forum (FIB). 💬 In the panel discussion, experts Ana Gabriela Ferreira, Caroline Somesom Tauk, Clarissa Mendes and Kelem Chr. P. Jordão, Ph.D will talk about the draft Brazilian AI regulation from an international perspective. 💻 Big news for #AI! Today the Council of the European Union approved a ground-breaking law aiming to harmonise rules on #ArtificialIntelligence, the so-called artificial intelligence act #AIAct. It is the first of its kind in the world. Uses of AI within the EU will be secure, trustworthy, and ethical. The new law aims to foster the development and uptake of safe and trustworthy AI systems across the EU’s single market by both private and public actors. At the same time, it aims to ensure respect of fundamental rights of EU citizens and stimulate investment and innovation on artificial intelligence in Europe. The AI act applies only to areas within EU law and provides exemptions such as for systems used exclusively for military and defence as well as for research purposes. With Reuters confirming the EU have firmed up details of its landmark AI Act, it will interesting to see how this affects innovation and speed of adoption across industries. We have a deal on the Artificial Intelligence Act #AIA. The European Tech Alliance appreciates efforts made to regulate high risk uses of AI, while at the same time avoiding overly burdensome rules that could  impede the development of beneficial use cases.   EUTA recognises policymakers’ hard work to reach this landmark agreement. However, there remain essential details that require further clarification. We hope that the final legislation will ensure that European tech companies can both develop and deploy innovative AI models and systems, enabling them to compete on a global scale and provide the highest-quality services and products to their customers without being compelled to allocate growth resources to cumbersome compliance processes. The Network of Centers (NoC) Secretariat is excited to share a summary report on Costa Rica’s new AI Bill (No. 23.919). This report distills insights and recommendations from experts across seven NoC Centers and colleagues from other collaborating institutions. Here are a few key points: 1. Governance should not only aim to limit the use of AI but also promote and guide its application toward social good. 2. Identifying AI incidents is crucial for providing substance and evidence for regulations that correspond to the specific context of the countries in the region. This helps in understanding the AI infrastructure of these countries, along with their main characteristics and needs. 3. The vision of risk-based regulation should be approached with caution, given the complexity of its implementation. Moving forward, it will be essential to learn from the challenges faced during the implementation of such regulations and document them to the extent possible to increase the evidence base. We would like to thank all colleagues who contributed to the making of this report. Special thanks go to Diputado Oscar Izquierdo and his team for giving the NoC Secretariat the opportunity to reflect on this new AI Bill.

Strong voice - important message on global governing of AI!

Today, I’m excited to share the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work at very fast pace and collaboration with my fellow members of the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Advisory Body on AI. This was a first-of-its-kind effort that has culminated in our final report “Governing AI for Humanity”, which includes guidance for international AI governance. Some of our key findings:  - The UN report warns that many countries, particularly in the Global South, have been excluded from international discussions on AI regulation, with over 100 member states missing from key agreements. - The report highlights the "patchwork" of voluntary AI guidelines and highlights the lack of accountability for decision-makers who deploy systems they don’t fully understand. - It calls for the establishment of a UN-led global AI scientific panel, an AI office at UN headquarters, and a global AI fund to help more countries access AI tools and training. - Top concerns identified during our outreach with experts included AI's role in spreading misinformation and its use in armed conflict, prompting calls for clear regulations on AI in warfare.
