🌟 Honored to have had the opportunity to speak at the Caribbean Maritime University's Annual Career Fair earlier this month! 🚀 I had the pleasure of delving into a crucial topic close to my heart: "Understanding the Job Market Expectations for Engineers." In a dynamic 20-minute speech, I shared 7 Secrets, strategies, and practical tips that I have learned that will allow the fourth students to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of engineering careers. As engineers, we're not just problem-solvers; we're architects of innovation, stewards of progress, and drivers of change. It's paramount to comprehend the pulse of the job market, anticipate its shifts, and adapt proactively. From embracing Continuous learning to honing communications skills, I emphasized on the seven secrets of Technical Proficiency, Communication Skills, Problem-Solving skills, Adaptability and Trainability, Ethics and Professional conduct, Constant Development and Continual Learning, and the passion you bring to the table. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a budding talent, staying attuned to market demands is key to carving a fulfilling career path. Today, at EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht, me and my fellow students visited an exciting corporate career fair, bringing together some fantastic mid-sized companies. You know that feeling of child-like excitement and anticipation leading up to a birthday or vacation? That’s exactly how I feel about one of my favorite events of the year: MIT Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP)'s Team Training Workshop. Sadly, I wasn’t able to make it this year, but my passion for this event and all it has to offer still remains. For those who aren’t familiar, MIT UPOP’s Team Training Workshop is an annual event designed to help students in the UPOP program hone their leadership skills through workshops, activities and hands-on learning opportunities, all culminating in a career fair at the end of the week-long program. It’s also a week I refer to as my “annual refresher” where I have the opportunity to connect with students, model the power of teamwork and even learn a little bit myself. Through the years, this event has deepened my love for mentoring in ways I never could have imagined. It's given me a chance to connect with each student on an individual level and work with them to craft their own career game plan. While the entire week is filled with amazing moments of learning and growth, the real cherry on top is their beaming faces after they nail their elevator pitch at the career fair. I’m always left in awe of the incredible talent these students possess—and that all they really need is a vote of confidence and a little push to get them going, and then they’re set. Having served on the advisory board for multiple years, I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of such a transformative program. I also want to thank all the dedicated staff who go to great lengths to organize the event each year, as well as the mentors who always bring their A-game, especially Mariquita Blumberg, Ed Kessing, Andrew Sommer, Betsy Boyle, Tim Dove and Reza Rahaman. I’ll always be UPOP’s biggest fan and can’t wait to see all the greatness still to come through this program. Had the opportunity to attend on behalf of AtkinsRéalis and Candu Energy Inc. There were so many great students that attended and wish I could have spent more time with them individually. The engineering field has a bright future! A few asked some great questions on how to make themselves stand out in the application process. I thought it would be great to share the 2 things I look for when reviewing resumes and interviewing candidates, especially those at the start of their careers. 1. We aren't hiring you for what you've done; we are hiring you for your potential. I look for areas that demonstrate your eagerness to learn and grow. Tough problem you faced? What did you do to solve it and what did you learn from it? Wanting to have a deeper understanding of why tells me you have potential to develop and grow in your career. 2. You may have worked independently at school, but in industry, you very rarely work by yourself. Highlight where you have collaborated in teams. That group project or committee you sit on - I'm interested in that! Finally, looking for a career is a full-time commitment. Spend the time tailoring your resume to the role, research the company, prepare for the interview and have your elevator pitch ready and you'll land that role.
