We often talk about successes here on LinkedIn, but how often do we share our latest failure(s)? Or other learnings from things which didn't work out? Not as much as needed, I'd say. So I'd like to invite everybody - share something that you were working on and it backfired or failed! Share the ugly parts of your job and daily work. Share the reality and not only the beauty. I'll start. A few months ago I was preparing a Skills Matrix which I wanted to introduce for one of my product teams. We had a bunch of changes in the team and I thought that we'd benefit from having a knowledge assessment overview, to see what gaps do we have in the team. I prepared it throughly (thanks for the tips, Amado Laclé!), I involved colleagues in creating it and then I was ready to roll it out. Except... We didn't. After presenting it to the team, there were so many questions and (good) suggestions regarding data gathering, that I decided that getting it all set up will take more time than I thought. While I thought it'd take just max 30min per person, baseed on their input - it would have taken much more. That wouldn't be a bad thing, but we were in a middle of a big technical initiative which had higher priority in my eyes - and I didn't want to side track the team by spending too much time on this one. So now we've parked it. I still want to do it and see a value in it, but it's not gonna happen right now. I'm not even too sad about it - I'm proud and happy of my teammates raising their concerns and questions before we started going with it, instead of just accepting and not seeing the value or interpreting it wrong. Do you think of your career as a product that you're building? Thanks to the #ProductSchool conference and insights from Nikhyl Singhal, I've picked up some key takeaways that really resonated with me: ▶ Don’t rely on your boss's feedback only, as they are often aligned with the company's needs rather than your own. Seek out mentors who can guide you in specific areas of development, keeping your self-awareness in mind. ▶ Who you know can be just as important as what you know. Building a strong network both inside and outside your company is crucial. Find 30 minutes each week to offer help or gain perspective on a challenge. He also talked about identifying 1-2 areas where you can excel, your "superpowers."But also, from my experience, its also important to know your limitations and be clear about what you will not become.
