What is urban densification? Rather than understanding it as a technocratic exercise and/or a target to achieve urban sustainability, I'd like to conceptualize it as a set of social relations that are connected to territories, property regimes and planning regulations or what Henri Lefebvre called "abstract space". I've written a paper about this theoretical approach and underlined that with a lot of empirical material from the Alpenrheintal/Alpine Rhine Valley! My hope is that this approach helps us to better understand how real estate markets in different contexts work in the fuzzy space between public and private spheres. The paper just got published in the journal "Urban Geography" and I'd like to thank Lindsay Blair Howe and Samuel Mössner for their support during the development of this paper. I have a book chapter coming out early next year in this edited collection. My chapter is based off very early pre-PhD work on Ondjaki’s Transparent City, which turns to literary geographies to examine the novel’s explorations of infrastructural violence, spatial resistance, and critical irrealism. #publication #phd The description of the edited collection: "The essays assess the role that literature, visual culture, architecture, archives, and ethnography can play in enriching our understanding of the complex histories of ports and port cities. They present the relation between ports and colonial infrastructure such as immigration checkpoints, detention centers, mines, plantations, shipping containers, canals, sewers, and rivers, and their impact on human and more-than-human environments. The volume approaches (post)colonial ports through the “ecotone,” a concept borrowed from geography and ecology to describe a transition zone where two biological communities meet and mix—such as a forest and a grassland—to bring attention to port (non)spaces as a hinge between their environments, communities, and colonial infrastructure. It foregrounds postcolonial and decolonial approaches to the ecotone to draw attention to the cultural, ecological, and geographical dynamics that inform the social fabric of contemporary ports and port cities in the wake of empire." https://lnkd.in/ecNte3uG

📢 Exciting News Alert! 📢 I am thrilled to announce the publication of our latest scientific paper titled "Do urban renewal programs make suburbs safer? A fine-grained GIS and space syntax study of an urban renewal project in the city of Toulouse." In this paper, we delve into the impact of urban renewal programs (PRU) on creating a safe environment. By collecting people’s perceptions of PRU and its impact on security through a comprehensive analysis. Our study applies a space syntax approach to analyze the spatial and structural properties of successive urban space evolutions and compares them with people’s perceptions of security. The findings are both illuminating and thought-provoking. We discovered a strong correlation between areas with high levels of social housing concentration, poverty rates, and insecurity. Surprisingly, visually controlled areas are vulnerable and attractive locations for drug trafficking, while density indicators have a minor influence on the perception of insecurity. This research sheds new light on the intricate dynamics between urban renewal, spatial structure, and perceptions of security.
