Continuing my series reflecting on features of me and my work in 2023, I come to this piece from February 2023 in the International School Services magazine, ISS NewsLinks. I wrote and article called: "Caution and Hope: New research on Adverse Childhood Experiences among international school students calls for preventive care approach" in which I share some key findings from the research I've been engaged in at TCK Training. Here's an excerpt:
"1 in 5 TCKs we surveyed were at higher risk of negative outcomes in adulthood. This can seem particularly shocking because so many parents and educators feel the wonderful opportunities provided by an international lifestyle – and an international education – create a buffer (or bubble) that protects children from the risks they might face if they were living elsewhere. The rate of TCKs with high ACE scores went up when extreme mobility was taken into account. 1 in 3 TCKs who moved location more than 10 times, or moved house more than 15 times, had a high risk ACE score of 4 or higher... Too many globally mobile adults are stressed, overwhelmed, and do not feel they can access the support that would help them. They do not have the internal resources and community support they need to parent at their best."
