Create a shared purpose Share progress and pitfalls Here’s why it works You’ve set your goals, you’ve made a plan, and now it’s time to implement. As you move forward, remember the most important element of achieving your goal: buy-in from the people who will be doing the work and taking care of your customers. Ensuring that they know, without a doubt, that you trust them, is crucial. And you have to trust them! You can’t do it all, and it is certainly not productive (or fun) to micro-manage the team. At Porchlight, we shared our daily sales goal with the team at every pre-shift meeting. Some leaders may share their “cover count” (the number of guests) goal, but I believed that sharing the dollar figure was more powerful. It was common for our team members to ask us during service how we were doing compared to the goal. When we achieved the goal, the manager would tell the team and thank them. When we didn’t achieve our number for the day, we shared in the disappointment but committed to try again tomorrow. We also shared profitability details at an annual staff meeting, and we always celebrated the work we did together, regardless of the outcome. Celebrating the process is even more impactful and sustainable than achieving the goal. Trusting your team enough to share the inner workings of the business has the potential to vastly improve financial performance, team engagement, and everyone’s compensation. Are you good enough that your existing customers and suppliers sell for you? I just returned from a major company event that included, our unbelievable associate Teams, our amazing vendor partners and some of the finest business owners and operators in the Foodservice industry! When I think about Leadership, this 4 day event encompassed so many examples of outstanding Leadership and they were on full display! I will touch on a couple of key take aways. First, the messaging to all those in attendance was on target, personal and powerful! The senior Leadership “all Leaders” meeting was powerful, honest, inspiring and clear about the company vision , what winning looks like, the focus on people and customers being front and center and each persons role in delivering success! Just the best in the business meeting! There are so many more positive examples to discuss but not today! The environment our Team created for winning was second to none and made the conversations with customers, prospects and partners easy, real, fun and relaxed! Everything was designed for our customers to find additional tools, people, products and support to grow their business and delight their customers! All our best Teams build such strong relationships with our customers, that when you match up prospects with our existing customers, just through personal experiences, time spent together and transparent discussions our customers sell our company and Teams for us! That’s when you know your Leadership Team is making a difference and that the industry craves more opportunities like this one to spend the one on one time with the goal that everyone wins!! The number one blind spot in Leaders today Likeability 💏 Yet, the most talked about skill that seems to be lacking in a team when things get tough is OWNERSHIP & ACCOUNTABLITY On a recent sales academy, we were discussing KPIs and Targets. We dont do KPIs. We have a group target they said. 🚩 The thing is with this, is that it masks the real issues. 📈📉📈📉 Legacy business vs New business ought to be on your radar. Having visibility on the overall health of your business is important, no matter how much it hurts. Pandering to everyone's WANTS in the business and ignoring the NEEDSof the business will eventually hurt. When I suggested to one of my clients that they needed to have a tough conversation with an under performer, they winced. They said they just couldn't do it. They were their most loved team member. So they limped along with this person for another 6 months, moved them from one department to another. Eventually this person resigned. But what happens when the leader is not taking action? What message are you sending out? Momentum slows down, relaxed attitude creeps in. Lacks of ownership and accountability to growth becomes the new normal. I am sure most business owners would agree, They didn't set up in business to be standing still or to go backwards This is an easy fix. 🎯Implementing trackable processes. 🎯Building a structure against your core values. 🎯Be transparent with expectations and have visibility in the business against those.
