Today, the Queensland Powering Australia team of Lynnard Cucksey and Krutika Momaya hit the road to visit local company VSPC Ltd to see firsthand their cutting-edge battery technology and manufacturing processes. VSPC has developed and patented processes for cost-effective manufacture of high-purity, nano-scale materials for the lithium-ion battery market. Their technology enables high-performance cathode materials to be produced efficiently with a focus on sustainability. Krutika and Lynnard were hosted by Plant Manager John Worsley and Lead Scientist Thushan Pathirana who walked them through their electro-chemistry lab and pilot production facility based in Brisbane. The facility encompasses design, creation and supply of high-purity, high-performance, nano-scale complex metal oxides and cathode materials – from initial research through to pilot-plant (current) and (ultimately) large-scale manufacture. It all began with a cell as small as a tennis ball, and through hard work, dedication, besting challenges, and employing novel solutions during the development, our cell not only kept growing in size but also we were able to enhance its performance. The team is tirelessly concluding tests and measurements, with results directing us towards progress. We could not have achieved such huge progress without the people behind eChemicles. Our cell today is 300 times larger than the very first one, meaning increased performance and capacity as well. Now eChemicles is on the edge of filling a container with our #sustainable technology, up to its brim. The EU H2020 NEXTAEC projet - Materials for Next Generation Alkaline Electrolysers, Grant no. 862509 - ended about six months ago. Just like in the present ENDURE project, UCLouvain was involved in the consortium as an academic partner, focusing on the development of new electrode designs. NEXTAEC was the cradle for the concept of laterally-graded, bi-layer foam electrodes for alkaline electrolysis. These electrodes combine high activity and efficient bubble removal in a unique way, so unique that we are proud to announce that we made it to Nature Communications!
