"Why so stupid to quit your job? 5-figure salary, aren't you happy?" This is my journey from Freelancing to Freedom. May not be for everyone. 👇🏻 Side hustles are all the buzz right now. '9 to 5 pays your bills. Your 5-12 builds your dreams' (Internet meme) Your corporate day job = stable pay check. Your after-office hours = dream building Is it that easy? 🤐 I quit my sales job close to a decade ago. At that time, my salary was >5-figures monthly. Decent for a graduate with 1+ years of working experience. On top of that, I was "freelancing" as a speaker and coach, with blessings from my bosses. But I knew these were important if I were quit my job to do it full-time: → Priorities - clarity of intentions and goals → Plan - roadmap on how to get there (and paid, well and consistently) → Potential - both short and long-term viability and sustainability So many lessons I've learnt but here are my top three: #1/ 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙛𝙪𝙣. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩'𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙧𝙪𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙨 💸 Too many freelancers and self-employed don't know their numbers: 1. Minimum monthly burn rate - what's your monthly expenses that you can afford to live leanly, to build your runway and dreams? 2. Emergency expenses - at least 9 to 12 months of expenses in bank 3. Earning equivalence - my rule was that my freelance income had to equalize my monthly job income 3 months consecutively before I could quit Throw in activity, client and pipeline management for the savvier ones! #2/ 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢. 🌟 I wanted to become a speaker and coach during my university years. Consciously and consistently seeding the work I do, philosophy, client engagements, lessons, wins and even failures on Facebook and LinkedIn made me #topofmind. Transiting to a full-time "freelancer" was a lot smoother because people already knew, liked and trusted me. Great personal brands are not built overnight. But over many nights (and days). #3/ 𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝. 𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙩'𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙙. ❌ Being a freelancer is NOT freedom when you are stuck with low fees, clients from hell and poor delivery. The way out is UP. You have to learn to know and charge your worth when your work has delivered value multiples, in relation to the investment. Yet, most freelancers also suffer from self-doubt and esteem issues. They should work with a coach to transcend those. Or read books on value-based fees and million dollar consulting / speaking from Alan Weiss. -- I took a gamble on myself at 26. And thankfully, my "freelance career" has taken off and me to over 20 cities to teach over 65,000 leaders as one of the youngest paid speakers in Asia. Was it risky to quit my job? The gig economy is growing fast. More opportunities are popping and coming up for freelancers, including those on LinkedIn. Now, many businesses and organizations want to hire experts for specific tasks. This opens a door for you to start a profitable career and work for yourself. However, you'll need both practical and people skills. If you're thinking about freelancing in 2024, here are some key skills you should have: 1. Being good at managing your time is crucial. You'll need to meet deadlines and stay organized. 2. Knowing how to market yourself on social media is essential. Start by joining networking events to meet new clients. LinkedIn is a great place to showcase your skills and connect with others. 3. You must communicate well. This means sending clear emails, making professional calls, and building strong relationships with your clients. 4. Understanding money matters is important. You'll be in charge of your finances, so learning about accounting and how to manage your money is key. 5. You also need to be persistent and motivated. Freelancing can be challenging, but with hard work and determination, you'll see success. Start your journey into freelancing now.

I left my N600K/year (N50K/Month) job in Ikoyi nine years ago. Before this time, I started learning about freelancing and what niche to begin with. When I selected a niche, I realized I was earning N70k monthly. I worked from home after a day of office work and was committed to it. It was very demanding and challenging; I wasn’t getting enough sleep. I realized that my monthly earnings had been consistent for six months, and I thought it was time to resign from office work and focus on freelancing full-time. Six months later, I resigned and started working from home. I took a risk. I thought, whatever happens, I’m up for it. No turning back. After I handed in my resignation letter, I used some of the earnings to buy myself a laptop and internet connection. I used another three months to learn more about my niche. I took several courses and reviewed how industry leaders are making their impact and becoming successful—it was intense and mentally demanding. I took another bold step: I had to leave my parent’s environment (my comfort zone). I needed an environment that would give me a different challenge. And again, the risk paid off. Now, I work from wherever I want in the world.   I was fortunate to have a brilliant support system (family, friends, girlfriend). +++ In another post, I’ll share a full gist about what transpired between my parents and me during the transition period +++ (Watch out for it) 5 years later, I have trained over 3,800 freelancers (Online and offline) globally in five years. It’s a small win, but I’m VERY proud of it. I’m happy to have impacted many lives and encouraged them from my experience and struggles. Today, I’m proud of them. I advise you never to leave a job without proper planning and headway. It can be disastrous. And when you take that step, don’t look back. Lastly, prayer is the master key. Are we still debating whether employed or self-employed life is better? As someone who has done both, I want to say this: Freelancing has unlocked doors, boosted my income, connected me with incredible people, and honed my skills like nothing else. However, I’ve also faced long days working in silence, an unpredictable schedule, and financial uncertainty. Full-time employment has given me financial stability, allowed me to expand my skill set and gave me a consistent schedule that gives me much-needed structure. However, I sometimes miss the freedom and flexibility, that come with pursuing my own projects and setting my own hours. There is a lot of emphasis on the comparison of whether “employed” or “self-employed” is the right decision. But in all honestly, I’ve learnt that it comes on a case-by-case basis. For me, the answer wasn't choosing one or the other, but finding a balance. What's right for you may not be right for someone else, and there's no universal answer. With experience on both sides, I say choose the path that aligns with your current needs and don't be afraid to adapt as you grow. Take it from me, somebody who loves the advantages of both!

I have yet to meet anyone who’s freelancing "just because"… Everyone’s freelancing for a specific reason: Family, travel, money, health. I think that encapsulates all of it. No one is going through the challenges of learning how to sell or manage your finances for feast and famine just for poops and laughs (you know the phrase). It's possible the job market will catch up with those desires and... 1) Adopt paid parental leave and normalize flex schedules for caretaking 2) Formalize and encourage WFH/remote work 3) Start paying abundant (ABUNDANT) wages/salaries 4) Normalize reduced workload and stress loads so jobs are manageable When the job market prioritizes these things, who knows, you might even see me back at a FT job! But it is not likely. So for the past decade, many of us have decided we are willing to 1) learn how to negotiate, 2) build and reinforce strong boundaries, 3) face our fears, 4) adapt to digital marketing and promoting our services, etc. etc. It's hard work... but it's far, far harder to be a FT employee these days. -- "If I hadn't made me / I would have been made somehow If i hadnt assembled myself / I'd have fallen apart by now" - Incubis

So, many people are joining the “gig economy” to supplement their finances. So what is the gig economy? The gig economy is a labour market characterised by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance work, as opposed to permanent jobs. It's often associated with jobs that are flexible, temporary or freelance. These jobs are typically facilitated by digital platforms that connect workers with potential jobs or projects. Some of the most popular gig platforms are the following: * Airbnb -- vacation, rentals. * Amazon Flex -- package delivery. * Deliveroo -- food delivery. * Dolly -- moving. * DoorDash -- food delivery. * Fiverr -- freelance work. * Instacart -- grocery service delivery. * iVueit -- commercial property pictures. * Lyft -- ridesharing. * Amazon Mechanical Turk -- online crowdsourcing. * Qwick -- venue staffing. * Rover -- dog care. * TaskRabbit -- odd jobs. * Uber -- ride-hailing. * Upwork -- freelance work. A LOT of people are struggling to get hired lately. It's rough out there. Everyone wants a full-time job, a W2, steady 9 - 5 because it seems secure, right? Well it is, until it isn't. And there's one skill you learn as a freelancer that is MORE valuable than any fulltime job. And that's how to find clients and get hired. It's like the old "teach a man to fish" saying. Having a "regular" job is like someone giving you a fish every week. All good, until one day out of the blue they say "We have to let you go. No more fish." Now, you're scrambling to find someone else to feed you and your family. Freelancers don't have that problem. Because they learned to FISH FOR THEMSELVES. We don't need to rely on anyone else. We know how to find and close clients on our own. Which means we can make money in any economy. Which means we don't have to depend on a business who -- let's be honest -- doesn't care if we eat or starve. The days when you could work at a company for 30 years and retire are gone.
