I'm catching up after some family time last week, and as a District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) parent, I think this is a must read. Lauren L. interviewed DMV educators about their academic priorities given how far students fell behind post pandemic and that recovery funds expire in September. In the second half of the piece, Lumpkin dives into math instruction at DC schools where the Chancellor says their approach is built around the idea that all kids can be “math people” (YES!) and placed an emphasis on students problem-solving and working to understand processes, not just memorizing formulas. DC also has the goal of making every 8th grader take Algebra I (high expectations for all!) and is working to make math lessons more applicable to the real world and future careers. Honestly, this piece is interesting even if you're not located in the DMV. https://lnkd.in/e-WztnDY

It is interesting - although the 8th grade for all model has not succeeded in other neighboring jurisdictions (see Montgomery County). Yes about high expectations, but should their also be a reality that not all students may be ready at the same level?
