An overwhelming majority of students answered the question about making a difference in their community with a negative response, which our Board Member, high school civics and history teacher Patrick Kelly found alarming. “It doesn't bode well for democratic governance or for community health if less than 50% of the population feels they can make a difference. Political efficacy matters — and this shows our students don't have it.” Read more about the results here: https://lnkd.in/edR8xyC8

‘After the riots,’ a new report by British Future, Belong and the Together Coalition, sets out a 12-point plan of policy proposals to address a “vacuum on communities policy,” following the summer riots. Trying to move on from the violent disorder without addressing its causes or putting in place the foundations to address them, the publication says, could “risk recurring episodes of the kind of disturbances we have seen, and increased polarisation and social conflict in future.” Instead, “Central government needs to provide leadership and a policy strategy, empowering local stakeholders to take action,” with a national social cohesion strategy and resources supporting and empowering local strategies from councils. The report includes recommendations for increasing social contact between people from different backgrounds in communities; piloting restorative justice programmes; pressuring social media companies to tackle hate speech and mis/disinformation and helping children to identify misinformation; and ensuring that asylum accommodation does not become a focus for community grievances. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander solutions fix Systemic problems. We need to invest more in decolonised approaches to solutions that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities have fullstop. Its the only way to address glaringly obvious systemic failures.
‘Tough on crime’ responses have become the political default in Queensland, despite no evidence to suggest these punitive measures improve community safety. In our submission in response to the Inquiry into Youth Justice Reform in Queensland, we examine the urgent need for multipartisan support to build on what works in the state to break cycles of disadvantage, reduce reoffending, and genuinely build safer communities.
