When is Justice Transformative? ⚖️ At our DIT Day conference "How to transform a university", Ana Vasques and Agni Kalfagianni will host a roundtable discussion on this topic. This roundtable aims to explore what a transformative research justice agenda looks like, which societal actors are likely to support it, and how to organize transformative justice initiatives in practice. The roundtable involves speakers from different perspectives to discuss the following questions: 🟢 What issues of injustice are at play in your area of work/research? 🟢 Which are the responses to these injustices (if any), who supports them, and how would you distinguish their transformative justice potential? 🟢 What does a transformative justice research agenda mean for you? 🟢 Which are inspiring ways for universities to (co)organize/support justice initiatives that can transform politics, societies, and the university itself? If you're interested then join us on June 4th - sign up here: https://lnkd.in/gXFMBriy Alessandra Arcuri, Daphina Misiedjan, Ph.D., Danny Vader, Hélène Van Engelen

Academia is facing a crisis because there is a lack of diversity of thought in research due to the fact that you need to be from a middle or high socioeconomic household/background to afford to study a PhD. Students from lower to mid income households are priced out of studying a PhD because they cannot afford it, and need to get into the job market sooner rather than later to support themselves financially as well as their families. Due to this lack of diversity of thought in academia, which includes socioeconomic diversity, the individuals who end up studying PhDs and conducting research have influence on the research that is carried out, and the direction in which academia moves forward. This is most likely the reason why it seems that most academics in university across the world have similar mindsets and ideas, and refuse to believe or accept a different thought process https://lnkd.in/e5WKVmHa

Editor of 'Conversations on Global Citizenship Education' (Routledge) | Educator, Author & International Speaker | I help universities & students develop a critical thinking-sustainable mindset | Twitter: @globalbosio |
📚 Exciting Announcement: Join Us for the Second Book Launch 'The Emergence of the Ethically-Engaged University' 📚 published by Palgrave Macmillan Springer Nature Group. 🌐 The lineup of speakers includes Hans (J.W.M.) de Wit, Katherine Wimpenny, Lilian Ferrer, PhD, FAAN, Yusef Waghid, Dr David Killick, National Teaching Fellow, Maria Manzon, myself, and Gus Gregorutti. 📅 Save the Date: Tuesday, March 5th, 2024, at 12 PM UK Time 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/g8JRXKmC 🌍 We will explore important questions together: ● What is an 'Ethically-Engaged University'? ● Why initiate a dialogue on Ethically-Engaged University within academia and beyond? ● How do educators across the Global South and Global North perceive the Ethically-Engaged University? Big thanks to Douglas Bourn UCL Development Education Research Centre (DERC) - ANGEL for chairing this event. The Emergence of the Ethically-Engaged University addresses queries regarding the role of the modern university, the type of individuals universities should look to develop in a contemporary society, and the relevance of globalization as well as how higher education institutions should define ‘ethical values and knowledge’. It presents a remarkable collection of theoretically and practically grounded chapters from internationally recognized scholars – located in both the Global North and the Global South – who have shared their perspectives on the role of the modern university as a public good institution ethically engaged in social transformation. To reflect this, the webinar will situate the discussion around the ‘ethically engaged university’ within an ‘ethical’ paradigm informed by ethical values (e.g., social justice, critical consciousness, fairness, equity, respect, and integrity) and knowledge. The ethically engaged university is informed and inspired by the idea of a global ethic. This is a conceptualization of the university that makes a specific commitment to learners’ emancipation of the human spirit toward principles of global justice. 🌍✊ #BookLaunch #EthicalEducation #EthicalHigherEd #EthicalUniversity #GlobalJustice

Yesterday at our #innovativeuniversities webinar we hosted Pano Kanelos President of the University of Austin (UATX). Despite the swirl of controversy and the political spotlight often cast upon the institution, our dialogue quickly departed from politics. It is clear that the University of Austin (UATX) is pioneering an approach that champions the capacity for a rational search for truth. Amidst a landscape where critical thinking and innovation in education are buzzwords, University of Austin (UATX) is not just talking the talk but walking the walk. Another profound takeaway from our discussion was the recognition that the U.S. higher education system has faced challenges in nurturing new powerhouses in academia. It's a reminder that while philanthropy tends to favor the well-established names, the frontier of innovation, especially in academia, often operates with limited resources. I strongly recommend to listen this conversation. We would be happy to have your comments and suggestions for new meetings https://lnkd.in/eFGqqqEw

Just wrapped up an incredible conversation on the Equity Institute's podcast with the inspiring Dr. José Gonzalez! We delved deep into the purpose of public education, discussing the transformative impact of Ethnic Studies and the challenges faced in creating a truly liberatory educational experience. Dr. Gonzalez, with 32 years of teaching experience, shed light on the power of education as a tool for liberation, emphasizing the need to go beyond conventional views and challenge systemic inequalities. We explored the purpose of public education as a means to create stable, spiritually thriving individuals, challenging historical biases and emphasizing the importance of cultural relevance. In response to critics who argue that discussions about race are divisive, Dr. Gonzalez compellingly made the case for Ethnic Studies as an antidote, questioning the efficacy of current educational models and urging a shift toward inclusive, consciousness-raising practices. This conversation left me inspired and reminded me of the vital role educators play in shaping a more equitable future. Huge thanks to Dr. José Gonzalez for sharing his wisdom and insights! Stay tuned for more thought-provoking discussions on the Equity Institute's podcast. Listen here now: https://lnkd.in/g_JFdyMB #EducationForLiberation #EquityInstitute #EthnicStudies #PublicEducation
